The Story

This second wine from the legendary 1855 Premier Cru Classé was renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion starting with the 2007 vintage, a tribute to Clarence Dillon, who acquired the estate in 1935. Earlier vintages - up to the beginning of the 20th century – carry the name Château Bahans Haut-Brion.

The 2015 vintage: Following in the footsteps of the greatest vintages

Spring 2015 (April, May, and June) was very dry. This was conducive to excellent flowering conditions, both quick and even. July was also a dry month. The effects of water stress were obvious in plots with the youngest vines.  Fortunately, it finally rained on July 26th (14 mm), which gave a new impetus to the young Merlot vines and enabled véraison, or colour change, to ...

Vintage 2015

Full report of Bordeaux 2015 by Andrew Caillard MW “Next in line in a great series of vintages; 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2015.

2015 is a wonderful Bordeaux vintage without the hype or hysteria associated with 2009 and 2010. The wines are generally expressive and generous with wonderful concentration and structure. Given another year in barrel, the wines should gain more complexity and fruit volume. Châteaux, in all sub-regions, are e...

Written Notes

Dark, ruby red colour. Refined, floral nose with marzipan, dark chocolate and . Medium-bodied palate is broad and harmonious. Extremely fine tannic structure forms a great backbone to subtle fruitiness. Lovely minerality shows up in long and lingering finish as saltiness. Peaking in 2025-2030. If enjoyed now, decant for 3 hours and serve at 17-18° with the classics – Magret de Canard or Entrecôte with haricot verts. JL 94p (4/2019)

Clarence de Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan- 57% Merlot 1%

Cabernet Franc 42% Cabernet Sauvignon Very deep plum, this is a

little more savoury in the nose than the Chapelle, with rose petal too,

classy stuff. The palate is very sexy here, velvety tannins, well covered,

this has so much oomph for a second wine, very ripe with delicious

tannins, exciting stuff. Lovely toasty finish, possibly the finest Clarence

yet. 92- 94/100, 2022-2035

Deep colour. Blackcurrant, graphite aromas with her sage notes. Plush and juicy with black currant fruits, mocha nuances and velvety textures. Builds up brambly firm with savoury vanilla oak notes at the finish. 93 points

Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black core. Elegant but slightly closed nose, needs some oxygen to open up. Plums, cherries and blackcurrants, hints of graphite and elegant roasting aroma, complex character. On the palate well structured with fine fruit, ripe tannins and excellent length.
