The Story

The philosophy behind work in both the vineyard and cellars is akin to that of a goldsmith, as befits a terroir of this calibre. It calls for careful decision-making and meticulous execution.

Soil management is entirely organic and viticulture is sustainable, with green cover between the vine rows and Guyot double pruning. Picking is done entirely by hand. The grapes are sorted and put into small vats corresponding to specific plots; each v...

Vintage 2022

Bordeaux 2022 vintage will stay in the memory of the world of wine as the exceptional vintage which kept a lot of surprises. The year started well with bud break at a normal date, so the frost in early April did not too much damage. The flowering started in mid-May and in optimal conditions. June brought stormy rains which were able to partially reconstitute de water reserves of the soil, however hail fell locally with sometimes very important...

Written Notes

Les Carmes Haut Brion - 40% C. Franc, 34% C. Sauvignon and 26% Merlot. 13.5% alcohol. 70% whole bunches to keep ABV down! An intense mix of black cherries and blackcurrants spiced up with roses, minerality, vibrant, great structure, and a strong backbone, incredibly sensual, sophisticated, and many layers. A strong candidate to compete for the wine of the vintage! 98-100p.

Ruby.
Blackberries, anise, dark fruits, liquorice, nuanced nose, layered, deep, liquorice. Quite intense but also quite compact at this stage. With a lot of air, violets and floral high notes.
Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, anise, liquorice, fruit driven, layered, nuanced, incredible texture, silky, velvety, the texture in this wine is something I have never encountered before, lots of tannins but so silky smooth, almost creamy, it is a study in itself. Energy kicks in in the finish, almost a salinity, superb length. Refined and will be incredibly fascintating to follow the development of this wine. pH 3,64. Around 60.000 bottles made. Has some tension to it, it just keeps showing new levels and new details for each sip. So refined. A gentle giant.

40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot result in a special blend which creates a very individual style with lots of freshness. Dark purple colour with violet hue. Initially closed, the nose opens up very well, displaying fine aromas reminiscent of fresh blackcurrants, blackcurrant spurs, hints of pencil shavings, gingerbread spices and hints of dark chocolate. On the palate well balanced with fine tension, opulent start and elegant mid-palate with excellent length. Juicy fruit and discreet spiciness. A great Les Carmes Haut-Brion with very promising potential.
