The Story

This jewel in the crown originates in the remarkable vineyard that shares its name. A proprietary blend aged in primarily new French oak, Maya showcases the site’s exceptional Cabernet Franc; it is graceful and alluring with an unmistakable pedigree. Fewer than 500 cases are produced each year.

Wine Information

The 1990 Maya is a monster in the making. Its super-saturated, opaque black/ruby color is followed by a tight but promising nose of earth, cassis, smoke, and gobs of sweet fruit. In the mouth it is even richer, as well as more tannic than the regular Cabernet. The finish is long, sweet and compelling.

The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Cabernet Franc. It should drink well over the next 20-25 years, probably longer.

Written Notes

Saturated ruby. Expressive nose of plum, currant, tar and tobacco; the only one of this range that beginning to show real development. Sweet, dense and pliant, with superb inner-mouth flavors. Finishes very long and ripely tannic. The harmonious acids extend the fruit. The '91 may yet surpass this wine, but the '90 has been a sentimental favorite of mine since the outset.
