The final blend is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc. Aromas and flavors of candied cherries, currant, black tea and cardamom come to the surface of this youthful wine. The mid-palate impression is generous, structured, and round, with bright red fruit and Asian spice flavors lingering on a very long finish. This is a wine that, while accessible now, will absolutely age well.

The Story

This jewel in the crown originates in the remarkable vineyard that shares its name. A proprietary blend aged in primarily new French oak, Maya showcases the site’s exceptional Cabernet Franc; it is graceful and alluring with an unmistakable pedigree. Fewer than 500 cases are produced each year.

Wine Information

The Dalla Valle vineyard proved its worth in the 2011 vintage, which was quite challenging in many parts of California. At several hundred feet above the valley floor, with a strict western exposure and very rocky soils, the vineyard literally stayed above the fray. The Maya blocks performed particularly well, delivering fruit with ripe tannins, aromatic intensity, and plenty of well-defined muscle.

Written Notes

(65% cabernet sauvignon and 35% cabernet franc): Bright ruby-red. Higher-pitched on the nose than the cabernet bottling and tighter today, offering hints of dark berries, violet, minerals and licorice. Then big, rich and mouthfilling, conveying a texture of liquid silk and a powerful impression of the site's red soil. Saline mocha and graphite flavors display terrific definition and underlying spine. Finishes with substantial building, sweet tannins and outstanding length. Zero impression of underripeness here. This classy, highly concentrated wine may yet merit an even higher score. An exciting 2011.
