The 1998 Hermitage is also gorgeous, yet has more concentration and depth. Described as a “granite year” by Jean-Louis, this puppy has searing, liquid rock-like qualities to go with ample dark fruit, gunpowder and flint. The Story

Jean-Louis Chave Chave is known for opting for blending Syrah from their 15 ha vineyards on the Hermitage hill. Their philosophy is against single vineyard wines since blending guarantees more complexity in the wine. In this superb wine this is clearly indicated by the tremendous complexity. Hamburger snuck in some 1998 Chave Hermitage, and I was glad he did. This was a saucy and delicious red, a vintage that is completely undervalued in the market for Chave, and about and sexy and seductive as a ‘young’ Chave can be (95).
