The Story

Dow’s Vintage Ports are only produced in years of exceptional quality and represent only a very small part of the total company’s production in that year. On average only two or three times every ten years are the weather conditions sufficiently good to allow for the making of Dow’s Vintage Port.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Dow’s Vintage Ports have been landmark wines in virtually every great year, consistently setting the ...

Wine Information

Founded in 1798 over two centuries ago, Dow’s was the first British Port producer to invest extensively in premium vineyards, acquiring Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira in 1890 and Quinta do Bomfim in 1896. Vintage 1980

generally declared year, like the ’66, the 1980 vintage only became recognised for its real star quality years after the declaration. Written Notes

Very dark crimson still with only a hint of age on the rim. Intense nose with a hint of mint. Complex, round and integrated with plump plummy fruit but a dry, peppery finish. A sort of Hermitage style of vintage port. A vintage unfairly overshadowed by the 1977 – although it’s a very irregular vintage with some poor examples. Lovely dry sign-off but lots of fruit as well as the tannins. A bargain! Really vigorous.
