The 2020 growing season was challenging from the very beginning, with a combination of warm temperatures and low winter rainfall that prevented an early bud break. The continuing trend in the Spring led to the highest water deficit recorded during canopy expansion and consecutively an early onset of stress. The vines adapted quickly to these exceptional conditions, setting the stage for
naturally low yields. Growth was harmonious and the balance between the size of the canopy and the quantity of fruit was perfect. Veraison progressed smoothly as the summer followed a normal pattern of cool nights and warmer days. The Syrah fruit was harvested on September 9th, as the heat intensified.
The 2020 Syrah marks a milestone in quality for a variety that has been present at Eisele Vineyard since the 1970s. The nose is spellbinding with incredibly expressive aromatics of freshly-cut ripe cherries prolonged by intense blackberry, violet, clove and cappuccino aromas. The attack is supple and silky with velvety tannins and layered ripe fruits sustained by a hint of cinnamon and vanilla, bringing delicious complexity. Notably, the inclusion of 20% whole clusters and the use of amphorae
and foudres for ageing have allowed us to reach higher precision, translating into very subtle aromatics and great finesse. A real gem this year!
