Graham is the undisputed star and kingpin of the 1985 vintage ports.  Yes, it is made in a sweeter style than the other ports, but it is a fabulous wine because of a dazzling level of black-cherry fruit, an enormous structure, and staggering depth, dimension, and length.  It is forward, as are all 1985s, and I would speculate that this port will be approaching maturity by 1992-93 and will keep 15-20 years thereafter.

Written Notes

What more could one want in a young Vintage Port? It has great elegance and great power. Brilliant, deep ruby-purple colour with boysenberry and liquorice aromas, full-bodied, very fleshy, with a firm backbone of tannins.

Port seems like a cold weather treat, but why wait? Eric brought two different blue cheeses among the array and the Graham’s did not disappoint. I stood the bottle in the cellar for a few days, then decanted the bottle. Cleared from the sludge of sediment, the wine had a beautiful ruby color with a slight amber edge. A gorgeous aroma- distinctively porto- offered sweet kirsch, chocolate, roasted fig and a mélange of spices. On the palate, velvet richness and an intense flavor that closely resembled the aromas. Candied cherry, fig, stewed fruits- all ripe, full. Exotic spices and a touch of alcohol in the finish. Absolutely explosive with the blue cheeses, but totally delicious on its own. Yes, we drank the whole bottle. It was too good to stop!
