The Story

Graham's has a reputation as a producer of outstanding Vintage Port for well over a century. These wines are renowned for their remarkable richness, concentration and firm tannic structure: a combination which yields impressive longevity. Graham's Vintage Ports consistently attain the highest ratings in tastings and invariably attract very high bids at fine wine auctions.

Vintage Ports are only made in years of exceptionally high quality harvests, which on average occur two or three times in a decade. The weather in the vineyards is the principal determining factor: conditions must be ideal throughout the growing season, as well as during the subsequent harvest.

Graham's extraordinary quality is the result of the unique characteristics of the five vineyards that contribute to the Vintage Port.

Graham's declares a Vintage Port only in exceptional years, perhaps three times in a decade, and in the intervening years may produce a Quinta Vintage Ports from Quinta dos Malvedos or Quinta do Tua. These Quinta Vintage Ports are aged in our cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for 10 years or more after harvest, before being released to the market, ready for enjoyment.

Graham’s Vintage Ports are outstanding for their consistent quality and long life. James Suckling’s series of notes for old vintages tasted in 1990 confirm this – how many wines, after 40 or more years, are rated so highly and noted as “will improve with age” ?

Vintage 1948

Port Vintage Report: A classic Vintage. Hot year. Harvest under very hot weather (reaching 45° C). Many dried and very sweet grapes, at Cima Corgo, so much so that it was difficult to control fermentation in some cases. Low quantity. Very sweet and full-bodied wine. Suckling says it is one of those “magic wines”, made to last one hundred years or more.

Declared by some but not all Port houses, 1948s are  classic Vintage Ports, with rich and individual wines that are unfortunately rather hard to find now. Fully mature for years, well cellared the best wines can be expected to have a 100 year life. The 48’s are characterised by a rich coffee/caramel flavour and are incredibly concentrated and rich, almost syrup like in their intensity.

Written Notes

Fine looking bottle with perfect level. Decanted only one hour. The 1947 Graham was as pleasant as it promised: very intense, deep and dark colour. The palate is very fresh and vigorous with good acidity. Complex and classy. This is a very noble wine. Sweet, but not too much. Still has a great future ahead - excellent.

Rich coffee/caramel flavour. Incredibly concentrated and rich, almost syrup like in its intensity. Graham’s 1948 is a truly magical Vintage with great class and power, still youthful in colour and showing continuing ageing potential. This wine confirmed Graham’s as a first division Vintage house.

This was a beautifully heady liqueur sort of port but with miraculous freshness on the palate. Hedonistic. Extremely rich and yet spry. Wonderful intensity and still some firmness. Beautiful persistence. I gave this 19.5 when tasting it at Quinta do Vesuvio but in retrospect I cannot remember anything wrong with it.
