The Story

History: The concept and style of 'Cepparello' was developed by Paolo De Marchi over a period beginning on the mid 1970’s. The wine is named after a small stream, Borro Cepparello, originating in the highest point of the vineyards on the Isole e Olena estate. The label is an original nineteenth century design used by the De Marchi family winery, Proprietà Sperino, in Northern Piemonte. First vintage 1980.

Written Notes

First up, this was under screwcap! It was bright, exuberant, singing – if wines like this don’t start the inevitable avalanche towards a more perfect seal then who knows what it will take. That said, we were not told it was under screwcap until later in the day, after all notes/scores done. Deep colour. There is a little oak evident but it is merging well and should not be apparent within a few years – and you really should not be rushing to drink this until at least then. Big bold black cherry notes. Ripe. Utterly delicious. Supple, soft tannins. Balanced, fresh acidity. Excellent length. A finely balanced wine. Most vintages, not all, are 100% Sangiovese. This one had 2% Trebbiano. A first class Cep.

The quintessence of Sangivoese, however with a slight "change" in the recipe: Paolo de Marchi has added a tiny portion of white Trebbiano grapes fermented together with the Sangiovese for retaining freshness. The result is a stunning wine with deep garnet colour and brick red hue. The nose displays and aroma reminiscent of balmy spices, prunes, dried figs and hints of aromatic herbs, dark chocolate and a whiff of blackcurrant jelly. On the palate fresh acidity and velvety tannins create a very energetic taste with dried fruits and mild spices. Excellent with very convincing length.
