The Story

Château Le Pin, or simply Le Pin, is an unclassed Bordeaux wine from the appellation Pomerol. There has never been an official classification of Pomerol. Even so, Chateau Le Pin commands prices that put it at levels equal to the best wines of Bordeaux. The unusually small estate is located on the Right Bank of France’s Gironde estuary, and its wine is periodically one of the world's most expensive red wines. Le Pin was the first of the "garage...

A Snap-shot of the 2014 Vintage by Markus Del Monego MW

2014 had an early start with budbreak around 10 days ahead of the 10 years average. End of May flowering started on the early terroirs in heterogeneous conditions, whereas the later varieties such as Cabernet-Sauvignon and Franc as well as later terroirs took advantage of a warm and sunny period beginning of June. July and August where quite cool and humid and in the second half of Aug...

Vintage 2014

Bordeaux Vintage 2014 - is not a great vintage like 2005, 2009 or 2010 but it will be able to secure a position as one of the very good vintages of Bordeaux.

Generally scheduled between the end of March and the beginning of April, Primeur Week in Bordeaux is always an exciting time because it allows a first glimpse of the latest vintage. The sheer number of wines available for tasting is impressive and a week almost seems short. This is why...

Written Notes

‘We thought it would be ok when we didn’t see any rot in the vineyards and we could choose when to pick, compared with 2011, 20112 and 2013.’ There was a week’s difference between young and old vines. They use the Vieux Château Certan picking team so they can alternate. 24 hla/ha. pH 3.5, TA 3.6 g/l (= 5.5 g/l expressed as tartaric).
Dense crimson. Very meaty indeed on the nose. Heady and ripe. Broad and luscious. More ripe and intense initially than any other 2014 I have tasted so far but then a cool finish with lots of sweetness. Very polished. Lift and plushness. But the elements need to come together.

Lively ripe plum and dark cherry with a hint of cocoa in the finish. The tannins here are cashmere-like in texture with deep, dark earthy flavors on the palate. Luscious and generous with lifted spices in the long finish. An excellent Le Pin made from 100% Merlot.

Ruby. Violets, floral, blueberries, elegant and nuanced nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, smooth, elegant, refined, nuanced, detailed and delicate, long and fresh. 93-95

  • 94p

Tasted in March 2015. Very intense nose of black fruit, good acidity, well-defined and well-composed, with splendid structure and finish. Splendid wine, but imho it lacks a bit more depth and complexity, as you would have expected from a wine at this price level. Several wines in Pomerol are better than Le Pin in this vintage, but it can possibly change, when this vintage is in the bottle.

  • 94p
Dark purple red with violet hue and almost black cenre. Great nose with pure and rich fruit, complex character, discreet hints of toasted flavours in the background. On the palate rich and elegant with persistant character, freshness, fine tannins, excellent length. A wine all in finesse and elegance.
