1949 Maison Leroy Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru  98 Points

Layers of sweet dried tropical fruits and dried flowers grabs you from the start; the palate is refined, linear and delicately layered with dried mangos, honey and white truffles. The wine reveals more with time as it continues to evolve and change in the glass – this is an exceptional, intense white wine that is awe-inspiring in how it has managed to defy time.

The 1949 Chevalier-Montrachet is everything. Powerful, structured and yet also remarkably sensual, the 1949 is a wine of stunning depth and textural richness. At times, the Chevalier feels like a red wine, such is its persistence and weight. After the Narvaux, I had my doubts anything could follow, but the 1949 Chevalier more than does that. It is simply another tremendous wine in this tasting.

Directly from Maison Leroy’s cellar. Pale golden colour, needs five minutes in the glass to open, starts with some nuts, then intense minerality, almonds, fried nuts, very elegant and balanced, fresh acidity, amazing how long it takes before it really starts to show. Very long finish. Way younger than expected. 96
