The Story

THE WINE OF A SINGLE HARVEST THAT HAS MATURED ITS WHOLE LIFE IN CASKS

The old Tawny Port for the lover of old Tawny Ports. Whereas our great 10, 20 and 40 year-old tawnies are blends, designed to maintain a consistent house style, a Colheita takes its personality from the year in which it was made. Each Colheita is distinctive yet at the same time strongly marked by the Quinta do Noval terroir. These are very rare Ports and some of the grea...

Wine Information

In exceptional years, certain lots of wine with great ageing potential are set aside to spend their lives maturing in casks. At a given stage, we decide to bottle a part of a vintage. The rest is kept in casks where the wine will mature into new expression at a later stage. Thus, one and the same Colheita vintage can be put onto the market on 3 or 4 occasions: after 15 years, 30 years or 40 years of maturing, and in some cases even longer.

Written Notes

Quinta do Noval Colheita is produced from a single vintage, matured in cask for at least seven years and bottled on demand. It combines finesse and elegance with creamy, nutty characteristics and like vintage port will take on the style of the harvest year. Increasingly rare, these wines are the supreme expression of the old tawny ports. The wine is made entirely from grapes of Quinta do Noval nearPinhão, in the heart of the Douro Valley. Colheitas spend their entire life in barrel until the moment of bottling, which takes place only as and when an order is received. The grapes were trodden by foot and fermented in the traditional ‘lagares’ of the Quinta, where a disciplined and intense treading is essential for a good final result.
We had the privilege to enjoy this wine at Noval. The varietalcomposition is traditional withTouriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Francesa predominance. This wine demonstrated the charm and harmony of a great mature Colheita. Dry fruit, hazel nut and almond nose is expressive but smooth and fine. The palate has a silky texture and a complex range of subtle nuances: spices, vanilla, figs, burned wood… Persistent aftertaste and perfect harmony. In a perfect phase now but no hurry to drink up.
