Vintage 1966

Below average rainfall during the growing season, a dry winter before vintage and frost damage in October and November 1965 led to lower yields and lighter yields after several good years. Very rich concentrated reds were produced, many of which are still excellent. Excellent white wines were also produced that year.

In 1966 there were 7,209 hectares of vines in the Barossa and 24,736 tonnes of wine grapes were crushed in that vintage.

Written Notes

At the 35th anniversary, Wolf himself opened one of his last two bottles of this, the first wine he made for himself He bought one hogshead – 60 gallons – from Viv at Best's, making 250 dozen all up. Amazing any left. The bottle had his signature from the time. And the wine? A privilege to try it but long past its best. A nutty, meaty old thing. Soft, some dry herbs, but old and tiring. It still has some life, which is a great credit, but approaching gentle senility. Wine like this, scoring irrelevant.
