The Story

Since 1952 this wine has long upheld Wynns Coonawarra Estate’s reputation as a producer of premium Coonawarra Shiraz. Typically, the Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz has aromas reminiscent of ground black pepper, mulberry and raspberry, with blackberry at the riper end of the spectrum. Oak is used increase the wine’s complexity, without dominating its distinctive, cool-climate character. A medium-bodied wine with a lengthy finish that will age g...

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

The 60th release of this wine and, at $25, a terrific buy. 2012 is a wonderful vintage around much of Australia, especially after the patchy 2011, with conditions in Coonawarra allowing for the slow accumulation of flavours in the grapes. Colour of fresh purples. Aromas of red cherries, raspberries, grapeseed notes, spices. Lots of vibrant fresh fruit flavours. A little hint of a red jellybean note. Juicy, with a gentle flick of acidity. Nicely balanced. Will age well but given that it is such an exuberant joy to drink now, one wonders why you'd bother. Lovely wine. Brilliant value.

Medium crimson. Fresh developed cranberry, mulberry aromas with light cigarbox, herb garden notes. Lovely pure gentle cranberry, mulberry cassis fruits, underlying dark chocolate notes, fine animated graphite textures and attractive mid palate viscosity. Finishes grainy and long with plentiful sweet fruit and dried herb cedar notes. Well-balanced and evolved wine. Medium-weighted and minerally. Very much in the idiom of a Coonawarra Claret. Not a blockbuster but delicious to drink. 13.5% alc – Now-2025 94 points
