History
Owned by the Alvarez family's Vega Sicilia, Alion was launched in 1991. The state-of-the-art winery with 85 hectares in total in vineyards is situated near Penafiel, in Ribera de Duero DO with the grapes coming from vineyards next to the winery (35 ha) and from Vega Sicilia's own historic vineyards at Valbuena (50 ha). The 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grapes come from vines of an average 20 years of age.
Alion, which is called "a wine somewhere between a Ribera del Duero and a Medoc in style", by owner Pablo Alvarez is inspired by the "modern classic" style of top Bordeaux, as Alvarez wished to adapt this style of wine to the unique climate and soils of the western Ribera del Duero. The average annual production is 300,000 bottles.
