History

Champagne Lombard situated in the heart of Epernay champions the diversity of the terroirs in Champagne.

As a family run independent company these values remain at the heart of the wines they produce.

The environment has great importance in the winemaking approach: the grape varieties live and grow in distinct soil types, for each of these the Lombard estate strives to express these different identities.

A rigorous selection of the grapes allows us them to offer a mystical discovery of Champagne thanks to a range of 15 cuvees which express the pre-eminence of the best Champagne crus.

Our cellars measure 1,5km, split into 2 levels, -12 and – 18 meters below ground.

The wines dedicated to Extra Brut dosage are kept approximately 3 years.

The wines dedicated to Brut Nature dosage, are kept approximately 5 years.

We have a wine library of vintages dating back to 1973.

Vineyards

The Champagne house is supplied by 60ha of vineyards which undergo a rigorous parcel selection process. The Chardonnay grape variety is orientated towards Côtes des Blanc with the principal crus from Mesnil-sur-Oger, Chouilly, Avize and Cramant. These areas are also present in the Premiers crus along with the villages of Vertus and Grauves.

The Premiers or Grands cru for Pinot Noir are sourced mainly from the East of the Montagne de Reims. Amongst the 17 grands cru of the Champagne region 11 of these are used to create the unique mineral and complex blueprint of the Lombard range of wines.

We own 5,5 ha (13,6 acres) mostly Premier Cru located in the West side of the Montagne de Reims. The vineyards will be organic in 2022.

Winemaking

After the pressing which always takes place in the area where the grapes have been harvested to avoid oxidation of the grapes and to preserve the delicate characteristics of the must, these are then sent to Lombard in Epernay where they are vinified on site.

The winery has a range of stainless steel vats dedicated and adapted to the volumes of each parcel in order to isolate each terroir, each individual vineyards site and to vinify all these wines separately before the blending takes place. These wines can then be blend with all or part of the wines being aged in oak-barrels.

They follow the example of their Burgundian colleagues by using oak-barrels to vinify specific terroirs or vineyard sites. The wines produced are revealed to be more intense and often more complex. During the blending process they are the perfect complement to the elegant and fresh wines which are vinified and aged in stainless steel vats.

After bottling the wines stay in the hundred-year-old cellar for 2 to 3 years for our Premiers Crus. The Grands Crus are aged for more than 5 years. This ageing process gives the wines their natural balance and reveals all the aromas linked to each terroir and each parcel.

After disgorging the potential of each cuvee is discovered. After tasting the decision is taken to see whether the wines will undergo a low dosage or zero dosage depending on the character of each wine in terms of elegance, complexity and authenticity.

The House is equipped with 80 stainless steel vats, from 25hl to 250hl, appropriate to vinify separately every Cru or “lieu-dit” origin.

Barrels ageing is used to make our wines to reach smoothness: 6 to 8 months of ageing among our 120 barrels.
