The Story

There is no translation for the word "terroir" and it comes from the inheritance of several generations of winemakers who, over the years, carefully noticed the places where the best grapes grew. For example, the vine of cabernet sauvignon ”the king of grape vines in the Médoc”, requires a long ripening period and prefers well-drained gravel soils. While merlot is more sensitive to drought. It is planted on a cooler soil which can contain more clay (good water retention).

A great wine also comes from vines of a certain age with roots going deep into the ground (minimum of 15-20 years of age). Our parents or grandparents often planted them. This wine is to be appreciated after at least 10 years and up to 30-50 years of ageing. Thus, all the work we do is handmade and this great wine is the result of a long chain.

Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat led to early flowering. Additionally, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and we can expect a more opulent vintage than in recent years.

This year's summer was the hottest since 1959, but the rain fell at just the right time during the growing season. The harvest took place two weeks before the norm and will produce grapes with high alcohol potential and the lowest acidity since the 2003 vintage. As they say in Bordeaux: “It was a good and extreme growing season which , hopefully, also produces great wines.”

Written Notes

Château Ferrière 2020 Barrel Sample (Margaux); 94–96 points. The wood touches the wine and sustains the tannins. Its structure and its freshness combine easily with the pure black currant fruits. It is elegant, with a hint of strength in the tannins at the end. Made from organic and biodynamic grapes.

  • 96p

Ferriere CC - 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It was lovely on the nose with fragrant blackcurrants, with fine structure and complexity, lively and elegant on the palate, and with a smooth aftertaste. Very true to Margaux commune's style. 92-93p.

  • 93p

Dark purple colour with violet hue and black core. Sophisticated nose reminiscent of freshly baked gingerbread, fresh blackcurrants and blackberries, hints of candied orange peel in the background. Subtle oak. On the palate very refined, ripe yet firm tannins, ripe berries and juicy black cherries, lingering hints of aromatic herbs and mild spices in the aftertaste.
