Portugal, Fortified wine

Light beige color, with noticeable greenish reflections at the rim (barrel aging longer than the usual two years). Eucalyptus, beeswax, and honey on the nose. A velvety smooth palate, with intense caramel and subtle mint. Medium length on the toffee-driven finish. This might have been even better 20 years ago.

The Story

Real Companhia Vinícola do Norte de Portugal (commonly shortened to "Real Vinícola") was officially founded in 1889. Its creation caused immediate public and commercial confusion with the historic, older royal company founded in 1756. To distinguish them, locals nicknamed the 1756 company "Real Companhia Velha" (The Old Royal Company).

Wine Information

The wine was originally harvested and aged by a predecessor estate. It spent its initial years in cask and was moved to large glass demijohns (garrafeiras) around 1853. When Real Vinícola absorbed older wine stocks or merged later, they inherited these ultra-vintage stocks.

The 1963 Re-Bottling: Much of the remaining 1847 stock was officially labeled, certified, and rebottled in 1963, right around the time Real Vinícola was acquired by Rea...

Written Notes

The Real Compania Garrafeira Port 1847 is a time capsule from a bygone era, representing one of the rarest and most legendary "pre-phylloxera" treasures in the world of wine. Bottles of this extraordinary age and pedigree are exceedingly scarce, often sourced from historic private cellars or specialized wine auctions.

Because "Garrafeira" ports are traditionally aged for a period in oak casks followed by decades of slow, reductive aging in large glass demijohns (garrafas), this 1847 vintage has achieved an ethereal, almost immortal complexity. In the glass, it shows a deep, burnished mahogany-amber hue with a distinct olive-green rim—a classic sign of immense age and concentration.

The nose is a profound, slow-burning kaleidoscope of aromas. It opens with burnt molasses, dried figs, and roasted coffee beans, before unfolding into exotic notes of rancio, old cigar boxes, balsamic resin, and a faint hint of iodine and sea salt.

On the palate, the wine is an intense concentration of flavor, yet it possesses a striking, unexpected agility. The sweetness has completely integrated and dried out over nearly two centuries, leaving behind a silken, viscous texture packed with candied citrus peel, dark toffee, and walnut skin. What truly defines this wine is its soaring, volatile acidity, which cuts through the density and carries a monumental, warm finish that echoes with layers of baking spice, smoke, and ancient wood for several minutes.
