Robert O’Callaghan’s Rockford Basket Press Shiraz encapsulates traditional and contemporary winemaking philosophies and embraces the inherent qualities of old vine Shiraz: the physicality of winemaking where muscle and personal touch transform process into an artform; the traditional tools of trade (a 1910 petrol-driven old Bagshaw destemmer, basket press, open fermenters) and the complementary nuances of American and French oak maturation.
The winter 2000 in Australia was quite dry and Spring was cold and miserable. Summer and Autumn had a few rainfalls through them, with temperatures were normal. The results were very low crops producing wines of nice fruit character and extremely juicy but not particularly tannic (below average). The wines are lovely fruit wines.
Deep colour. Developed cherry, tobacco. herb, violet aromas with earthy nuances. Iodine, seaweed, redcurrant, rusty flavours. Sinuous and complex with rusty red cherry flavours and plentiful chalky textures. Finishes slinky and long. Attractive wine showing plenty of development and complexity. An earlier drinking style which should hold on for quite a while still. Now-2025. 91 points
