The Story

Coldstream Hills was established in 1985 by James and Suzanne Halliday and has since grown to become one of Australia's leading and most awarded small wineries. Situated in the picturesque Yarra Valley east of Melbourne, the steep close planted vineyards of Coldstream Hills have become a signature of the region. So too have its wines, which reflect regional character, consistency and style. Sourced from low yielding vineyards in the Lower and Upper Yarra Valley, all fruit is selectively picked prior to its delivery into the winery. It is made using a variety of handling and fermentation techniques, including the use of whole bunches. Each batch is then matured in seasoned and new oak for eight to nine months, prior to blending and bottling.

Region: Yarra Valley is cooler than Bordeaux yet warmer than Burgundy, picturesque Yarra Valley is one of Australia's foremost cool-climate wine regions. An easy one-hour’s drive from Melbourne, the area is home to more than 80 cellar doors. In addition to the huge range of wineries, the area boasts superb contemporary restaurants, authentic rustic farms - and luxury overnight accommodation if the sightseeing gets too much! The fertile Yarra Valley soils produce famously elegant and textured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Tasting note:  Ripe characters of dark cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry and blood plum are enhanced by whole bunch spice and savoury French oak. Medium bodied in style, the palate is vibrant, textural and complex. Dark cherry and raspberry characters dominate with underlying nuances of stalk spice, mineral graphite and beautifully integrated French oak. Fine chalky tannins give the wine structure and length. One for the Cellar.

Wine Information

Vintage: A mild Spring, followed by a warm and very dry ripening period led to a heightened onset of vintage. Despite a compressed harvest period, Pinot Noir held up well producing wines of flavour, texture and depth.
