The Story

The idea of developing Riesling Rosé wine, like many killer ideas, arose by accident in late fall 2019.

"We sat in the garden of winemaker Axel Neiss in the Palatinate wine region of southern Germany. There was still a drop of Pinot Noir red wine in my glass after the tasting when our host poured dry Riesling there, chosen as lunch wine. I guess at that point I was focused on my cell phone and did not pay attention that the wine was being poured in my glass which still had a drop of pinot noir left. When I lifted my eyes on table, I saw a glass of rosé wine in my glass that I decided to taste. I asked what the rest of the party thought of the very tasty rosé wine. To my surprise, no one else had rosé wine and only then did we realize what had happened - this is how the story of Riesling Rosé began and hopefully the end will be history! ” says wine importer Tuomas Meriluoto MW from Winestate Ltd (Finland).

Due to the EU and German legistlation, the wine is not allowed to be sold as rosé wine, since rosé wine can only be made by extracting the colour from the skin, not by blending red and white wine. To sell it, the wine is sold as a wine drink with a blend of white wine, red wine and water.

Blend: 97% Riesling, 2,99% Pinot Noir and 0,01% water.

Written Notes

To my knowledge this is the first ever produced commercial Riesling Rose in the world. It was created in collaboration with a Finnish wine importer Tuomas Meriluoto MW and wine producer Axel Neiss from Pfalz. The wine was pilot-launched exclusively in Finland in April 2020.

The wine was made by blending 97% Riesling wine with 2.99% Pinot Noir red wine. Due to the German law this cannot be sold as wine due to the blending process, except with one condition. It has to have a drop of water added. Thus the wine has addition of 0.01% German water. The vintage cannot be marked on the label but the blended wines are both from 2019 vintage. The wine has 6.9 g/L acidity and 9 g/L residual sugar. The alcohol level is 12%.

The colour is bright salmon pink. Open perfumey nose shows fragrant floral aromas combined with mandarin, peach and green apple tones and fine touch of white pepper. Off-dry, light-bodied palate is fresh and refined with good vibrant acidic backbone and delicate citrus flavours. Good balance and harmonious wine with lingering lemony finish. This wine is great for social occasions. For food pairing, this goes well with seafood salads, fried salmon with white asparagus and Toast Skagen. JL 88p (5/2020)
