The Story

Alvaro acquired his first vineyard, Finca Dofí, in 1990. Then, in 1993, he located what is now regarded as the crown jewel property in Priorat, a precipitous, northeast-facing Garnacha vineyard on well-drained schist that had been planted between 1900 and 1940. Alvaro named it LErmita for a small chapel, or hermitage, that sits atop the hill.

In 1995, the flow of critical praise for Alvaros LErmita began, and it hasnt stopped. But ...

Written Notes

A breathtakingly pure and vertical expression of Priorat — luminous, aromatic, and profoundly mineral, showcasing the mystical power of the L’Ermita amphitheater.

The 2020 L’Ermita opens with an exquisitely lifted and kaleidoscopic bouquet: wild blueberry, black cherry, pomegranate, and redcurrant, intertwined with intoxicating notes of violet, rose petal, lavender, and crushed Mediterranean herbs. Beneath the floral and red-fruited elegance lies a deep mineral core — licorella slate, warm stone, and graphite dust — a signature of the vineyard’s ancient terraces.

On the palate, the wine is silky, vertical, and strikingly pure, delivering a seamless interplay of vibrant fruit, tension, and fine structure. Layers of raspberry, cherry liqueur, blackberry, and blood orange unfold gracefully, accompanied by subtle nuances of star anise, black tea, cocoa powder, and sweet spice.

The tannins are long, ultra-fine, and filigreed, offering precision and backbone without weight or aggression.

There is an unmistakable sense of energy and lift — a brisk, crystalline acidity that propels the wine and accentuates its elegant, almost Burgundian transparency. As it opens, deeper savory notes emerge: dried thyme, licorice root, smoked earth, and a whisper of truffle, adding layers of quiet complexity.

The finish is long, haunting, and mineral-driven, echoing with red fruit purity, florals, and a shimmering licorella salinity that seems to linger endlessly.

A magnificent L’Ermita — radiant, refined, and emotionally expressive, balancing power with purity in a way that few wines on earth can.

Built for decades; expect 30–40 years of graceful evolution.
