The Clay-Driven Powerhouse: How Late-Summer Restraint Forged a Toned Tuscan Legend

Masseto 2022 is an intensely structured, naturally powerful, and deeply expressive 100% Merlot that stands out as a highly unique triumph from a scorching Tuscan growing season. The official 2022 vintage report details a hot, bone-dry summer across Bolgheri that severely tested the region's vines. However, the property’s ancestral, Pliocene-era blue clay soil...

The Story

Masseto was born ‘almost by chance’ in 1986 when it was decided to vinify the Merlot from the Masseto vineyard alone as it ‘promised well’. This small, exceptional and legendary cru has soon become a collector’s item sold in auctions all over the world. The first vintage was called very simply ‘Merlot’ but, from 1987, it has taken on the name of its vineyard ‘Masseto’.

Wine Information

The 2022 vintage was a tale of challenge and resilience. After a hot, dry summer lasting 75 days, characteristic summer storms in August restored the physiological balance of the vines, and cool September nights were ideal for the accumulation of sugars, aromas, and tannins. This resulted in concentrated, powerful grapes with a unique personality.

Written Notes

Vintage Report: The 2022 growing season was defined by extreme heat and prolonged drought across Tuscany. The severe lack of summer rain threatened to shut down vine maturation completely. Fortunately, much-needed rainfall arrived in mid-August. This broke the heatwave, restored soil balance, and allowed the Merlot to preserve its vital freshness. The resulting berries were remarkably small, thick-skinned, and intensely concentrated. This vintage marks the first official blend overseen by Marco Balsimelli in the cellars.

Tasting Notes: Pours an incredibly dense, deep ruby-purple color. The nose is immediate, profound, and deeply expressive, bursting with crushed stones, ripe black plums, cigar box, fresh lavender, and subtle exotic spices. On the palate, it delivers a full-bodied, effortlessly powerful, and velvety texture. The fine-grained, powdery tannins seamlessly wrap around a core of dark chocolate, licorice, and a distinct hint of salted caramel. The finish is remarkably long and noble, carrying an elegant echo of blonde tobacco.

Inside Information

Decanter rated this wine 98 Points, saying: "The summer was so arid in 2022 that the vines shut down and ripening was halted until mid-August rains arrived. This helped to preserve acidity in the grapes, giving sensational freshness to balance the rich and finely structured palate. Masseto 2022, then, combines the best of both worlds: fruit ripeness and concentration, and freshness and poise. It's not as immediately seductive as the 2021, but there is so much potential in this long-lived vintage. Scents of cool, damp earth, dark hedgerow berries, Mediterranean scrub, and cocoa and wood give a sense of what is to come once time has untangled everything. Zingy, crunchy acidity steals the show early on, segueing into a mouthful of succulent yet dense dark berries and spice imbued with plenty of energy. Then some balsamic herbs and floral notes lighten the palate, before a touch of salinity and some bitter herbs emerge on the finish, with a refrain of bright cherry. Something special. Drinking Window: 2026-2050."
