Written Notes

Full bottle 1,196 g. From Nittardi's Maremma estate Mongibello delle Mandorlaie between Scansano and Magliano, 8 km from the sea at an elevation of 250 m. The soil is mostly sand with granite stones and clay underneath. All vineyards are certified organic. 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc. 14 months in new (10%) and used barriques and tonneaux, a few months in concrete to blend the different varieties. TA 5.6 g/l, pH 3.35.


Mid ruby and not as densely coloured as I expected given the varietal composition. Pretty aroma that shows all the varieties in the blend: the more savoury and spicy Sangiovese as well as the pure black fruit and delicate leafiness of the Cabernets. That inviting scent seems more Cab Franc than anything else. This has become such a fine-boned and elegant wine, nothing forced or heavily extracted. A light touch that brings finesse and freshness. The oak seems to have smoothed the tannins but not emasculated them. Structured and still refined. You could just about drink this without food but better with, I think. (JH)
