The Story

BEN is short for the Italian forename Beniamino, which is often bestowed upon the youngest and most beloved son. And this is true of Nittardi’s BEN, a long-cherished dream of ours and, since 2012, our first Maremma white wine.

BEN is made from 100% Vermentino, a grape varietal indigenous to Tuscany and found along the entire Mediterranean coast. The ideal microclimate here in Southern Maremma, not far from the Tyrrhenian coast, gives BEN its refreshing taste and subtle hint of saline minerality.

The 2014 vintage was rated best Vermentino from Tuscany by the famous wine writer James Suckling. The 2015 vintage was rated best white wine from Tuscany by the famous wine critic Jancis Robinson.

Name: BEN D.O.C. Maremma Toscana

Varietal: Vermentino 100%

Soil: Mostly sand rich with stone and clay

Production: Fermentation and six-month maturation in 10.5-ton stainless steel tanks, followed by a brief period of bottle aging.

Profile: Intensive bouquet of fresh fruit with hints of citrus and a mineral, sparkling freshness. Medium-bodied and balanced, with a long-lasting finish. Excellent as an aperitif as well as with starters and all variations of grilled fish, pasta and vegetable dishes. Best served at approx. 10° C (50° F).

Written Notes

Fresh and intense fruity nose with peach, honeydew melon, white flowers and touch of apple pie. Dry, medium-bodied palate has round and oily texture with ripe yellow fruits and mineral seashell sensation in the finish. Lovely wine to drink now at 9-11°C with smoked whitefish, grilled calamaris or seasam oil flavoured fried scallops. – JL 87p (12/2022)
