Historia

Feudi di San Gregorio – History and Principles

Consisting in 1986 of the work of two Irpinian families, Feudi di San Gregorio places its roots in Sorbo Serpico, in the province of Avellino, imediately dedicating itself to the restoration of a few authentic products of value and to the individualization of a qualitative standard responding to the most severe needs of the market.
In a moment in which every part of Italy increase the so-called international varieties, Feudi di San Gregorio points with courage its heritage of local viticulture.

Why Feudi di San Gregorio?

At the time of the pontificate of Gregorio Magno (590-604 A.D.), the lands of Sannio and of Irpinia, located along the Appia and always cultivated to vines, constituted the Sannitic base of the Patrimonio of San Pietro.
The living memory of the Patrimonium of Saint Peter of the Gregorian age originates the denomination "San Gregorio" of the gentle rolling hillsides of Sorbo Serpico in the heart of the ancient Principato Ulteriore. It is here that Feudi di San Gregorio has its winery and it is in these historic roots that our company takes its name.

The first steps

The first steps were slow and thoughtful, all dedicated to constructing the winegrowing and winemaking reality of the company. Great attention was dedicated to the selection of terrain and planting of the vineyards. The new plantings reproduced the historic grapes and listened to the recommendations of old local vintners, supplemented by the contributions of influential scientists and engineers.

Finally, in the autumn of 1991, in the winery was built with a thought of a future of small steps, the fruit of the first vintage was made into wine with the Nobellum. In 1992, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo saw the light of day. After only two years, in the respect of the discipline of production, we presented our first Taurasi produced with aglianico grapes harvested in authentic vineyards planted in the heart of the typical production zone. It was an immediate success, both in the marketplace and with critics.

The growth of the company

The quality and commitment were recongnized with enthusiasm from the highest representatives of the sector: first, Gino Veronelli commented with great passion about the results obtained year after year.
Over the years, the company continued to grow, without fear of making bold choices: both in the cellar as witnessed by the release of Serpico and Pàtrimo, our great red wines, with enological projects very different from each other – and in the communication to the marketplace, with the changing of labels from the last ten harvests, in 2001.

Continuing the renaissance, 2002 was the year we received the Oscar del Vino from the AIS as best producer, followed in 2003 with a second recognition from Slow Food/Gambero Rosso as best label (after the 2001 Patrimo) to the Greco do Tufo.
2004 was the year in which we completed the work of restructuring and expanding the winery. Two years later is the opening of Marennà restaurant that got its first Michelin Star in 2009 .
We’re now keep on looking ahead, facing new challenges and trying to keep our traditional values.

The territories and the values of biodiversity. Irpinia, a historical region of the Campanian Apennines, is a unique vine growing and wine producing territory, where vineyards have always coexisted with fruit trees, woodland, olive trees and herbs: a rugged and yet gentle territory with a strong and genuine identity. Irpinia is an ancient inland whose vineyards were even described by ancient authors such as Pliny, Columella and Strabo. The Irpinia region is very varied, with a succession of mountains, hills and plains with rivers and streams in between. The territory’s orography causes a system of winds that gives the region good rainfall and creates a microclimate that sets it apart from the other Campania areas: vegetation is varied and thick; the short winters are extremely cold and snowy, while the summers are mild and long. This is not Campania, it’s Irpinia!

Viinivalmistus

Feudi di San Gregorio today epitomises the oenological renaissance of southern Italy, promoting a wine culture for the rediscovery of Mediterranean flavours. To promote southern Italy grape varieties, such as Aglianico, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, to invest in the land and in the century old tradition of Irpinia wine making, means offering a future to a unique environmental heritage. Established in 1986 by two Irpinian families, Feudi di San Gregorio has its roots in the town of Sorbo Serpico in the province of Avellino. Since its early days, the winery focused on the preservation of authentic top quality productions and on the definition of a premium quality standard to meet the highest and most severe market requirements. The new winery was inaugurated in 2004, reflecting Feudi di San Gregorio’s wish to blend its long-standing tradition with a futuristic architectural project. Climbing up the hill towards Sorbo Serpico, you enter a magical world, with streams of water, herb gardens and blossoming rose bushes. The greatest surprise however is inside the winery, with the long barrel cellar where we store our red wines. Our aim is to be more than a simple winery and become a place where people can meet, learn, and meditate, a workshop of ideas and culture, a welcoming and comforting place where one can find good wine. Internationally renowned professionals were involved in our project: Japanese architect Hikaru Mori was entrusted with the difficult task of giving architectural unity to the pre-existent structures that had been developed over the years. Massimo and Lella Vignelli, top representatives of Italian design in the world and “authors” of the winery’s labels, designed the interiors and the furnishings.
