Champagne Gosset has added an Extra Brut to its range, its first non-vintage expression of this style, with a dosage of 5g/litre.

The Extra Brut Gosset Champagne is made t has been made from a blend of 32% Chardonnay, 45% Pinot Noir 45% and 23% Pinot Meunier sourced from villages including Cumières, Boursault, Janvry, Chavot, Vertus, Cuis, Avenay, Tauxières, Louvois, Villers-Marmery, Trépail.

Vinified and aged for three years on its lees “to eliminate the risk of premature oxidation”, well beyond the legal minimum of 15 months, the wine has a dosage of just 5g/l, with the aim of preserving the “balance between freshness, fruit and vinosity, without masking the wine’s character or purity”.

On the nose, the wine is said to exude aromas of “white flowers, such as acacia and hawthorn, set off by succulent aromas of pear,”  replicated on the palate, along with peaches, mirabelles and greengages, and described as a wine with “great purity with a fresh and lively acidity”.

Gosset cellarmaster, Odilon de Varine, added: “This cuvée offers a subtle blend of aromatic precision and vinosity. It shows a complex and round character while being Extra-Brut It has been designed for drinkers who love lively Champagnes.”

The Champagne Gosset Extra Brut joins a portfolio of Champagnes which includes Gosset Grande Réserve NV, Gosset Grand Rosé NV, Gosset Grand Blanc de Blancs NV, Gosset Grand Millésime 2006, Celebris Vintage 2007 and Celebris Rosé 2007, which replaces Gosset Brut Excellence NV and is directed to the on-trade.

CHAMPAGNE GOSSET RANKED 4TH BEST CHAMPAGNE BRAND (AMONG 50 CHAMPAGNE HOUSES LISTED BY LA REVUE DU VIN DE FRANCE)

A new award given to The Oldest Wine House in Champagne: Aÿ 1584.
Champagne GOSSET has been awarded by the latest issue (December 2013) of La Revue du Vin de France the 4th position among the 50 best-known brands of Champagne leading prestigious houses such as Dom Perignon (5th), Krug (7th), Billecart-Salmon (10th) and Ruinart (20th).
This ranking is the ultimate distinction following several others like the Prix Spécial awarded by the Guide Bettane & Desseauveto the highest 2013 quality improvement among all other Champagne Houses or the Grappe d’Or from Guide Hachette for the consistant «Coup de Coeur».

It confirms several outstanding ratings lately given to the GOSSET Cuvées such as :
    • 19/20 to GRAND MILLESIME 2004 by Tom Stevenson in The World of Fine Wines (issue 41 2013)
    • 92 given to both CELEBRIS VINTAGE 2002 and CELEBRIS ROSE 2007 in Weinwirtschaft (issue 23/2013)
    • The Gold Medal for GRANDE RESERVE from Mundis Vini Wine Competition (september 2013)
    • and from The Champagne Guide 2014-2015 – Tyson Stelzer Australie for:
        GRANDE RESERVE: 94 points
GRAND BLANC DE BLANCS: 94 points
        GRAND ROSE: 94 points
        GRAND MILLESIME 2004: 96 points
        CELEBRIS VINTAGE 2002: 96 points
        CELEBRIS ROSE 2007: 96 points
This high opinion of the “excellence of GOSSET’s know-how” has also been approved, last October, by the French Government label “EPV” (Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant), given to-date to only 2 Champagne Houses.

Historia

A traditional know-how since 1584.

Founded in Aÿ in 1584 by Pierre Gosset, Champagne Gosset is the oldest wine house in Champagne. Over the next four centuries, generations of the Gosset family would go on to win fame not only as alderman, mayors and magistrates in Aÿ, but also in growing and trading wines of Champagne. Whatever the period, the men and women of the Gosset family had a single ambition — to improve their terroir.

In 1993, after more than 400 years of family ownership, Champagne Gosset was purchased by the Renaud-Cointreau family, who also owns and manages the highly regarded Cognac Frapin. The Renaud-Cointreaus insist on a continuity of the old-style champagne appropriate to its historic birthplace in Aÿ. While other Champagne houses are handing over the reins to large corporations, the Renaud-Cointreau family understands the importance of preserving the heritage in winemaking that has, over 430 years, made Champagne Gosset the ultimate name in champagne.

In 2009, Champagne Gosset announced the acquisition of a new property in the heart of Epernay, which doubles the cellar space and serves as an extension to its production facilities in Aÿ.

Viiniviljelykset

Champagne Gosset’s reputation for quality starts in the vineyard, where it sources grapes almost entirely from premier cru and grand cru vineyards in the Côte des Blancs, Grand Vallée de la Marne and Montagne de Reims. These vineyards rate an average of 95 percent on the “échelle des crus,” or “ladder of growths,” — the classification system of the villages in the Champagne region. The top-rated villages are given a score of 100 percent and are called grand crus; currently there are 17 such villages. The next tier has scores ranging from 90 to 99 percent; these are the premier cru villages, of which there are 44. The remaining 296 crus have scores between 80 and 89 percent.

Champagne Gosset has long-term relationships with growers that date back several generations, allowing the winemaking team to direct activity in the vineyards.

Viinivalmistus

"With Gosset champagne, the wine comes first, the bubbles come later." This is the motto of Gosset, to which cellarmaster Jean-Pierre Mareigner has remained faithful for more than 30 years.

Champagne Gosset’s style is based on a philosophy that aims to utilize all the grapes and terroir have to offer and to minimize other inputs. For example, unlike most champagne producers, Gosset carefully avoids malolactic fermentation, thus preserving the malic acid present in the grapes.

Champagne Gosset keeps all grower lots separate until it is time to blend the cuvées and vinification temperatures are managed carefully to preserve delicate aromatics.

During assemblage, all the lots are tasted blind – there are no recipes with Champagne Gosset. Similarly, dosage for each lot is selected during blind trials. Gosset champagnes are made with extreme care and kept in dark cellars for at least three years — and up to seven for vintage champagnes and 10 for the CELEBRIS cuvées — before release. Extended lees aging is another hallmark of Champagne Gosset.

Gosset’s inimitable style — pure, precise, elegant and textured, with remarkable longevity — has changed little over the centuries. Once a favorite of the kings and queens of France, Champagne Gosset remains one of the most illustrious and prestigious producers, considered by many collectors and connoisseurs as the world’s preeminent luxury champagne.
