Uutiset

“Henriques & Henriques ten year olds [and 15 year olds] are much the best of the genre. Made from the four ‘noble’ grapes, they have much of the clean, high-toned, incisive character of a really fine Madeira for a fraction of the price.”Richard Mayson, Portugal’s Wines & Wine Makers

“Top-quality madeira is one of the world's most wickedly underrated fine wines. I know you will have read that about sherry - and that's true too - but I can understand why people don't like sherry. It does have a characteristic flavour that some palates will find offputting. But madeira tastes like the elixir of life itself.”Jancis Robinson, www.jancisrobinson.com

Historia

The history of Henriques & Henriques, founded by João Gonçalves Henriques goes back to 1850. After his death in 1912, a partnership was created between his sons, Francisco Eduardo and João Joaquim Henriques, hence Henriques & Henriques. From then on, Henriques & Henriques played an important role in viticulture and wine making on the Island and in 1913, the family interests were established as a firm, and by 1925, the firm concentrated on shipping its own wines instead of supplying them to other shippers.

With the death, in 1968, of the last of the Henriques, João Joaquim Henriques, known as “João de Belém”, (who had no heirs) the company was left to his three friends and partners: Alberto Nascimento Jardim, Peter Cossart (who made 53 vintages with the company) and Carlos Nunes Pereira. In June 1992, Henriques & Henriques undertook an expansion programme with a value of more than 5,000,000€ and invested in the construction of new premises in Câmara de Lobos and also on building a new vinification centre at Quinta Grande.

The new premises at Câmara de Lobos house the offices, laboratory, tasting room, shop glass fronted cask stores (for ageing wines) and the basement below houses different sized stainless steel tanks for storage and blending.

In 1995 the company decided to plant at Quinta Grande a new 10 hectare vineyard next to the vinification centre. Henriques & Henriques is the only Madeira producer to own vineyards.

The Company uses the most recent technical innovations, but at the same time, maintains the family traditions of almost 200 years of producing finest Madeira wines. The full control of every aspect of its production has enabled H & H to nurture and sell wines of exceptional quality.

Grapes

Grape varieties – There are six grapes that can be used for the production of Madeira: (see below for wines styles) 5 of these are classified as “noble”.

Sercial – The most dry.

Verdelho – Medium dry.

Bual – Medium rich/sweet.

Malvasia – Most classic Madeira grape, the richest and sweetest.

Terrantez – A rare variety that produces much sought after wines.

Tinta Negra – The most prolific and versatile of all grapes on the Island. It has the capacity of producing wines in the style of those produced from the other varieties.

Canteiros

The wines that go into “Canteiro” are aged in casks, usually on the top floors of the wine cellars, where the temperature is higher, for a period of two years. This originates a type of oxidative ageing in the cask, allowing the wine to develop unique characteristics of intense and complex aromas. “Canteiro” wines may only be commercialized once at least three years have elapsed, counting from the 1st January of the year following the harvest.

Steaming

Madeira is the only wine that is heated, to simulate the effects of the old round trip voyages to the East. After harvesting the wines are fortified, to 17-20% alcohol content, with vinic alcohol, and stored in “estufas” vats heated to 45 degrees C for not less than 3 months. Afterwards it is allowed to cool very slowly to room temperature and left to rest for several years.
