Kopke launches CNK Very Old Tawny Port to celebrate its 380 years

A rare and exclusive wine – a blend of nectars that have rested in the cellars of the oldest Port Wine House for a nearly a hundred years. Very old tawnies from the 1920s and 1930s and the remarkable Colheita 1900 make up this Kopke CNK Very Old Tawny Port.

Limited to 380 numbered bottles, Kopke CNK is an homage to the House’s founder, Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, symbolising endeavour, care, dedication, passion, foresight and expertise of the generations of people who have striven to preserve a living legacy, which we share with the world today. It also reminds us of the everyday duty we have to safeguard this legacy for future generations.

Most of the wines that make up this blend have been maturing in casks of 650 litres. The only exception is the oldest – Colheita 1900 – which has aged in a large oak vat of 2500 litres. Kopke CNK Very Old Tawny Port has a mahogany colour streaked by greenish hues. The nose reveals notes of spice, fig, almond, walnut, coffee, chocolate and a hint of snuff… And then, on the palate, flavours of jelly, cinnamon, resin, curry and balsamic. The balance between sweetness and acidity is perfect, its finish is powerful but fresh, and lengthy.

The wine was officially presented on 21st June, during a party to celebrate Kopke’s 380th anniversary that took place in Vila Nova de Gaia, gathering more than eighty guests – amongst them importers, distributors, Portuguese and International press, government officials and wine institutions

Historia

Established in 1638 by Christiano Kopke and his son, Nicolau Kopke (who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League), the House of Kopke is the eldest Porto wine export firm. Through many generations, the Company was run by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines. Some of its members were deeply involved with the Oporto trade, mainly in the 19th century, when Joaquim Kopke, entitled “ Barão de Massarelos “, took part on most economic actions held. Meanwhile the Company was sold to the Bohane family, by the end of the 19th century, who tried to run it from London, where they had most of their economic interests.

The distance and the two World Wars disabled the control of the Company and they decided, then, to sell it. In 1953 and after some negotiations, the Barros family, whose leader was then Manuel Barros, bought the House of Kopke and since then it belongs to its Group. In fact, Manuel Barros was connected with the export and commercialisation of Port Wines since his youth. After becoming a partner of Barros, Almeida & Cª, he bought other firms such as:  Hutcheson, Feuerheerd, Feist, all of them old Port Wine exporters. Manuel Barros and his Sons, João and Manuel, run the Company until the middle of the seventies, trying to increase even more the image of its wines and developing an important agricultural unity in the Douro District. Its centre is “Quinta S. Luiz “where a great work of modernization is being made, together with the development of new vineyards planting the best varieties known. In June 2006, the SOGEVINUS Group widens presence in the Port Wine sector through the acquisition of C. N. Kopke. Nowadays Kopke is the oldest Porto Wine brand and assume the leadership in “Porto Colheita” category.

Viinivalmistus

The character and identity of each brand is something we do not touch. They are secular insignias that have survived in time for their identity. The rare interventions are made in an attempt to improve some aspects, but the main challenge is to always maintain the quality because these wines are internationally recognized.

For the Oenology team of Port Wine, is having a huge responsibility at hand. They have the grace of working with gold reserves, wines elaborated in the past and left in legacy so that today they can work them.

These reserves are a rare inheritance, with enormous capacity of aging and to which one owes a deep respect. They are also a challenge and motivation for Sogevinus winemakers to prepare new gold reserves for the next generation. If we want to care for the next five centuries of wine, this work can not stop.
