The Story

Hand-harvest at their best moment, the grapes are destemmed, crushed and vinified in a careful maceration with extraction of colour, tannins and aromas of the pellicles, complemented by permanent pumping-over during fermentation. This process takes place in vats at a controlled temperature between 28-30ºC, until reaching the desired Baumé. At this phase grape brandy is added (benefit), originating a fortified wine. A wine of an exceptional quality, from a single harvest. Matures in wood for variable periods of time, never less than 7 years, being bottled afterwards by market requests.

Colheitas are single vintage Tawny Ports (that is, Ports that have been aged for a long time in large oak barrels, rather than bottled after a few years and aged in bottle), and Kopke are specialists with this style of Port. They have good stocks of old Colheitas which they bottle on order, and the good news for those with significant birthdays coming up is that they are planning to begin bottling magnums.

Written Notes

Deeper amber, golden hue. Dried fruits, some apricots, some nuts, intense, leaps out of the glass, marzipan, citrus nose. Fresh acidity, fresh, fruity, dried fruits, citrus, minerals, peach, apricots, sultanas, superb balance, very long. Stunning bottle. 96

Ruby centre with a faded chocolate rim, the nose reticent at first soon blossoms revealing a vivid biscuit crumb nose, with raisen, the palate is tenuous, powerful, and extremely long, with a nutty maderisation. Unctuous, cool and fresh. This is lacy and complex. Milk chocolate. This grows in stature just a great wine.
