History

The first records of the Bara family date from the 1600s, in the villages of Bisseuil, Oiry and Chouilly, near Epernay. In 1833, Auguste François Bara, a robust, full-spirited young man, arrived in Bouzy to begin work as a cooper. Three years later, in 1836, he married Annonciade Robert, who was already the owner of some vines. Since then the House of Bara has been handed down among generations for more than 180 years. While maintaining family tradition and character, Bara champagne has embraced evolving technologies to craft the perfect champagne with the aid of a modern press, thermo-regulated vats and extension of the existing cellars. Above all, Bara champagne operates with principles of respect for the land and environment with which Bouzy champagne grapes are grown.

Specialist of the Pinot noir, Christian Forget strives to preserve the signature of the House by producing well-structured and elegant wines, fully expressing the Terroir of Bouzy. Succeeding Chantale Bara, her sister Evelyne Dauvergne has been taking over the management of the House in 2018. Very proud to be able to apply the traditional and family values passed down by her father, disappeared in 2015, Evelyne really aims to develop the company meeting the requirements of our century and of course to pursue this beautiful family story with a mix of wisdom and sweet madness.

Vineyards

The Paul Bara vineyards are in Bouzy, a highly renowned winegrowing area in the heart of the famous 'Montagne de Reims'. All 33 Bara vineyard parcels have Grand Cru status. There are 11 hectares of vines in total, including 9.5 hectares of Pinot Noir and 1.5 hectares of Chardonnay, all of which are managed with great care and rigour. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are noble grape varieties and here they produce remarkably aromatic, full-bodied and fruity wines with a unique character. This gives Bara’s chief winemaker a wide variety of possibilities – by carefully combining wines, he makes magnificent blends that display the rich and highly expressive character for which Pinot Noir from Bouzy is famed.

At Bara, we have exacting standards and are keen to employ sustainable winegrowing methods. We strive daily to improve our environmental performance by avoiding any use of chemical weedkillers or insecticide. In keeping with ancestral traditions, cover planting is used between the rows of vines. We believe strongly in closely monitoring the vineyard environment to ensure that the biodiversity and quality of its soils are preserved. Proof of our commitment, the House received in 2020 the HVE "Haute valeur environnementale" and VDC "Viticulture Durable en Champagne" certifications.

Winemaking

Every step of the winemaking process is performed with absolute rigour, and every effort is made to allow the wines to reveal the best of themselves. During harvest, the grapes are picked by hand with the utmost care. They are then pressed using two 4,000 kg presses; one is a traditional wooden one with a horizontal plate, where the edges of the 'press cake' must be brought back to the centre of the press manually using a fork, and, the other, a modern automatic titled plate press. These 'small' volume presses mean that the various varieties and production from different plots can be processed separately up to blending. The end-of-press juices (known in French as 'jus de taille') are never used in Bara champagnes, which is one of the specificities of the house. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures and the malolactic fermentation is prevented to preserve the freshness and all of the aromas of the wine.

In spring, this is time to blend subtly the different plots, grapes and different years to give to each Paul Bara champagne its own style and unique character for which the brand is renowned.
