Written Notes
In a region with lots of characters and some idiosyncratic wines, Fred Howard fits in nicely.
This was a delicious wine, largely overcoming any perceived vintage shortcomings, although seemingly doing so by highlighting what was good from that year. The fruit was picked on March 5, the 3rd day of the heatwave.
Dense burly style, ripe with notes of warm earth. For me, mostly black fruits with a hint of some red berry notes. Some of the locals see this as very much in the red berry bucket but I would argue that this is merely because we have different calibrations.
Soft, with quite a plush palate. Nice length. Very fine tannins. Just lacks a smidge of intensity on the finish. But a joy to drink.
