The Story
"Sodaccio", in the Chianti Classico area, indicates a land where nothing is grown and is mainly good for sheeps. So, its agricultural value is close to zero. These open areas that are beaten by the wind are however ideal place for Sangiovese.
The vineyard: The Montevertine Sodaccio is the name given to the second vineyard planted by the property in 1972.
The 1.5 hectare vineyard that is located in the altitude of 400 meters, is divided into two plots on top of a knoll divided by a small road. The pergola trellised vineyard plots enjoy primarily North-East exposure and partly South-East exposure. The red soils are stony and iron-rich.
Sergio Manetti, Giulio Gambelli and Bruno Bini, moved by unity of intent and complementarity of roles, give shape to an idea that it still isn't there, as if to follow invisible traces of a destiny marked. The opportunity is offered by Giorgio Pinchiorri with the request for a wine made especially for him. the answer has something vanguard- stands for the time: a cru, a Sangiovese with Canaiolo balance - never more than 15% - both grown on this harsh piece of land.
Winemaking: Spontaneous fermentation in 8, 10 and 12 hectolitre vats, with pumping overs and no filtration.
The first release: 1981 (around 1,000 bottles)
Until 1998, production ranged from 8,000 to 12,000 bottles. The wine was made only in good years.
The vineyard was hit by the disease at the end of the 1990s and it was completely replanted and terraced. Today the vineyard covers 1,3 hectares

Italy Vintage Report by Tb: 1985 more than made up for the weak year that preceded it. An extremely cold winter ensured the vines went into complete hibernation, until a warm, dry spring woke them up, well-rested, giving them the energy they would need for the varied summer weather. The dry autumn paved the way for the harvest of one of the best vintages of the decade, both in Piedmont and Tuscany. Although little cultivated, 1985 was an exceptional campaign and is best remembered for the genesis of modern wine production, particularly in Tuscany. Led by the Super Tuscans, it saw the start of rapid development in the production of modern fine wines. It also produced a wine that has gone down in history as one of the best in the world - Sassicaia 1985.
