History

Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro is located in Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid), in the very heart of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, in La Planta estate, owned by the Arzuaga family. This is indeed a privileged location for vine cultivation as the vine stocks receive the sunlight and humidity needed for the perfect ripening of the grapes.

The production of the Arzuaga-Navarro wines rests on three premises: the soil, the climate and the orientation.

The flora and fauna of the region can be found at La Planta. Pines, oaks and Spanish cedars coexist with boars and deer. This confirms the unquestionable love the Arzuaga Family feels for the world of nature. The estate consists of 1,400 hectares, a real luxury at the centre of this denomination of origin, the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero.

Florentino Arzuaga purchased the estate in the early 1990s. Soon afterwards, he planted the vine stocks, built the cellar and started the winemaking process.

Vineyards

Quality is fundamental at Arzuaga-Navarro. It is our most precious and impeccable aspect.

This careful attention starts in the vineyards because it is impossible to make good wine without healthy, quality grapes. It is important for the output to be limited, consistent with Castilla’s low-fertility soils and rough climate—too much production would reduce the wine’s concentration and quality. The excellent quality of our grapes, an inexcusable element of good wine, is the same quality with which our vineyards are taken care of. Our passionate work has turned our wines into the most prestigious brand within the Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin.

The Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro boast over 150 hectares of vineyard distributed between the immediate vicinity of the cellar and the natural area of La Planta estate. The Arzuaga-Navarro vineyards enjoy a unique climate: during the day, a sharp sunlight bathes the land, while nights are fresh and humid. This combination of climatic factors favours a slow and perfect grape ripeness, resulting in a healthy, dyed and sugary fruit with aromatic acidity. In this Castilian region, characterized by having scarcely fertile soils, the Tinto Fino or Tempranillo varieties as well as the French varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are cultivated. For over 20 years, 80 percent of the vineyards have yielded around 4.00 kg/ha. Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro also owns vineyards outside the province of Valladolid, in the town of Malagón, in Ciudad Real, where the Pago Florentino wine is produced.

Winemaking

Given the location of the vineyard, the harvesting is carried out in early October. A month earlier, ripeness monitoring and grape tasting in different estates begin. For the production of certain wines, the cellar acquires grapes from expert wine growers with vines nurtured in compliance with Arzuaga-Navarro’s requirements.

On the other hand, each vineyard is harvested separately, by plots, and follows a strict selection. Grapes are hand-picked and stored in 15-kg crates that are later transported to the cellar where they undergo the winemaking process.

Inside information

Founded in the early 1990s by the Arzuaga Navarro family, the cellar stands near the Duero River, adorning a road as Castilian as the one connecting Soria and Valladolid. The building is an ode to stone, solid and rustic, forming arcades of monastic reminiscence, with towers at the sides and a belfry crowned by a weathercock at the centre.

The stone in the outside and the warm elm wood inside welcome visitors, increasing the mood for special wines.

Florentino Arzuaga, a great wine lover, founded Bodegas Arzuaga-Navarro after purchasing the Finca La Planta, an estate located in the town of Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid), where the fauna and flora of the area coexist. With pines, oaks and Spanish cedars, wild boars and deer, Florentino realized the great potential of an estate large enough to have a horizon of its own. Then came the vines, the cellar and the wine—red wines as he liked them, with a backbone yet elegant, well-rounded yet complex. The spirit of the Arzuaga family combines an entrepreneurial tenacity with a sensibility for aesthetics and perfection.
