History

Castello di Fonterutoli has been the heart and soul of the Marchesi Mazzei story and wine-production for nearly 600 years. Owned by the family since 1435 the estate still retains its original form, that of a tranquil country village, surrounded by 650 hectares of wood, vineyards and olive groves. A cluster of houses, the church of San Miniato and the villa, built at the end of the 1500s, tell the story of a family deeply rooted in the Tuscan tradition.

Today, after almost six centuries the Marchesi Mazzei continue to devote themselves to winemaking, with an uncompromising approach to excellence, an eye towards innovation and an abiding respect for the land. The vineyards and state-of-the-art winery at Castello di Fontertuoli represent one of the most acclaimed wine families in Chianti Classico.

Castello di Fonterutoli is a unique place where past and present unite and where guests rediscover themselves and the real Tuscany amidst an untouched and breathtaking landscape. The century-old hamlet and wine estate of Castello di Fonterutoli provides the ideal setting for visitors to enjoy Tuscany the way it was meant to be experienced – surrounded by soft, green rolling hills and lush vineyards, sipping elegant wines and indulging in fresh regional cuisine.

Markus Del Monego MW/BWW2022-Best Germany Wine Critic of the World, Wine Writer (Germany)  tasted  11 wines  from  Castello di Fonterutoli . In a tasting of  38 wines

Almost three years of pandemic influence made travels in the world of wine rather difficult. This journey to Tuscany offered the opportunity to see, what happened in the last three years and to taste wines, which are actual releases. It was wonderful to talk to the heads behind the wines. A highly appreciated moment after difficult times.

Luca Gardini/BWW2022 -Best Italy Wine Critic of the World, Wine Writer (Italy)  tasted  1 wines  from  Castello di Fonterutoli . In a tasting of  17 wines

Fonterutoli Chianti Classico 2019 is another strike from Mazzei family. Fonterutoli territory never ceases to amaze, and that’s the peculiarity of a Chianti that is shaped by blending 90% Sangiovese, 5% Malvasia Nera and 5% Colorino.

Jancis Robinson MW, Wine Writer (United Kingdom)  tasted  1 wines  from  Castello di Fonterutoli . In a tasting of  15 wines

Ceretto Barolo Brunate 2013 –  La Morra. Pale ruby with orange tinges. Although the Brunate has the same ageing regime of one year in barrique, of which 10% was new, the oak is much more noticeable here than in the Bricco Rocche just tasted. Elegant and subtle focused fruit with fine, grainy tannins. Finely tuned, elegant wine with a subtle fresh finish. 17+/20 points.

Baldéro Chianti Classico 2017, with the contribution of Merlot, shows an intense and velvety nose recalling blackberry and blueberry, scents of fresh pepper leaf. Juicy and fresh mouthfeel with a good texture. Convincing persistence.

Mazzei 1435

The first longer journey to a wine region after the pandemic lockdown brought me to Tuscany. With some friends I stayed at the Castello di Fonterutoli with visits of all important vineyards of the Mazzei in Tuscany. A thrilling experience with a lot of very fine wines.

Markus Del Monego MW/BWW2022-Best Germany Wine Critic of the World, Wine Writer (Germany)  tasted  7 wines  from  Castello di Fonterutoli . In a tasting of  12 wines

Since more than six hundred years, the Mazzei family produces unique wines with spirit and passion renewed from generation to generation.
At Fonterutoli, as well as at Belguardo and Zisola, resides the same philosophy that aims to promote local vine varieties as an expression of the identity of the region, in respect of diversity and nature, via sustainable agriculture and improvements mindful of the delicate hydro-geologic balance, in order to prevent soil erosion and maximize water reserves in the region. All of this in order to be able to hand the land intact to future generations. (Mazzei 1435)

The difficult situation during the difficult Corona times has let to some delay for samples, therefore this tasting is the second part of the Anteprima with great wines from Tuscany. This time there was a pirate included again.
