History

The Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona estate is located on the south east slope of the municipality of Montalcino, close to the medieval village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate and to the famous Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which dates back to the 11th century.

The entire estate, extending over 220 hectares of which 55.5 are in vines and 40 in olive groves, has all the typical characteristics of the Tuscan countryside adorned with rolling hills, pastures and woods with unforgettable colours.

Set between Arna hill and the Orcia River to the south-east, it offers a unique panorama with the beautiful contour of Mount Amiata in the background. Wild animals, scents of flowers and plants and the typical farmhouses dotted around, create a peaceful and calm atmosphere in this area.

The Palazzo was erected in the XVII century by the Montalcino Bishop Fabivs de' Vecchis, Abbot of S. Antimo Abbey, Conte Palatino and Imperial Advisor. In 1985, Giuseppe Bianchini and his family decide to take up residence at the Palace that become the headquarters of the Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona estate.

With determination and pride, it maintains the traditions and culture that are part and parcel of the property.
The underground cellar in the Palazzo is the historical memory of the winery, able to evoke great suggestion to our visitors since always, keeps our oldest vintages, still possible to visit upon reservation.

Vineyards

Vigna Ferraiole, Vigna Egle, Vigna Contessa and Vigna Colombaio are just some of our most important Sangiovese Grosso’s vines. Spurred cordon vineyards facing South are located in the heart of the Val d’Orcia Park, Unesco World Heritage. The soil texture is medium grain with good levels of marl and shale, dating from the Eocene period.

The Sangiovese Grosso clone is selected from the eldest vines of the estate characterized by straggly bunches and big berries with thick skin. It is a particularly representative kind of Sangiovese coming from Montalcino area, which gives quality even in difficult vintages.

Both wines Brunello di Montalcino DOCG “Pianrosso” and Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva “Vigna di Pianrosso” Santa Caterina d’Oro are coming from a careful selection of grapes of the single vineyard, the eldest and the most representative.

“Pianrosso” covers 11,69 hectares (29,22 acres).

Soil: medium grain with good levels of marl, dating from the Eocene period.

Altitude: from 240 to 360 metres above sea level.

Winemaking

Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona estate has two wine cellars: the historical wine cellar, dedicated to the long ageing of the most prestigious wines located in the basement of the 17th century Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Palace;

the new wine cellar, near the village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, now the estate headquarters with fermentation, aging, refinement and storage facilities.

Molinello cellar

The Molinello is a completely underground building, developped to benefit from an optimal and natural temperature. It exceeds 2500 square metres. It was conceived and designed by Giuseppe Bianchini and erected at the end of the 90s, becoming now the estate headquarters, where winemaking processes take place. The cellar is provided with the best oenological equipments that allow a perfect alliance between modernity and tradition.

The first fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats with temperature-controlled. Then, in a suggestive ageing cellar, heart of the winery, many slavionan oak barrels, from 7,5 to 75 Hl, keep our wines Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino for many years, giving elegance and typical flavors. After the ageing process in oak, a technological bottling and labelling line ends the entire process.
