History

Claude Dugat has long been a respected and beloved figure in Burgundy, while the wines of his eponymous domaine have captivated the world. Working alongside him for the better part of the last decade has been his son Bertrand and daughter Laetitia, to whom Claude turned over control of the estate with the 2015 vintage.

While the Dugat family traces its roots in Gevrey back to the 19th century, it was not until 1955 when Claude’s father Maurice purchased the historic landmark Grange des Dimes and converted the stone barn into a winery that the family domaine was born. The family farms some 6ha throughout Gevrey, with many of the region’s oldest vines falling under their care in sites such as Lavaux Saint Jacques, Charmes Chambertin, Chapelle Chambertin and Griottes Chambertin.

Vineyards

The work of the domaine has always been a family operation, now with Laetitia working the vines and Bertrand tending to duties in the cellar. Since 2013, the farming has shifted to an organic emphasis with the adoption of biodynamic principles as well. In the winery, an emphasis on purity has inspired decisions to restrict the use of sulfur, chaptalization and acidification. With earlier harvesting, more restrained extraction and a tempered oak influence, the new generation of Dugat wines are classic in style, striking a balance between power and finesse with a transparency that allows the terroir to show through by focusing on the phenolic maturity of the fruit over manipulation.

Inside information

The key to Dugat’s quality is the raw material, from vines which naturally produce small berries through control of vigour. Claude Dugat is not one of the late picking factions in Gevrey because his grapes are properly ripe in good time. These are unusually rich, concentrated wines, without any feel of over extraction. Though there is a sumptuous outer layer which makes the wines attractive in youth, they are clearly built to age.

Neal Martin/BWW2022 - Best Bordeaux Wine Critic of the World, Wine Writer (United Kingdom)  tasted  1 wines  from  Claude Dugat . In a tasting of  26 wines

The half-bottle pair of 1945 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru from Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé was part of an extraordinary private dinner that focused upon 1945 clarets. I did not mind the brief detour into Burgundy. Our generous host wanted to compare two bottlings of this legendary Burgundy, one bottled at the domaine and the second an “Avery of Bristol” bottling acquired at the auction of the much-missed John Avery MW. First and foremost, for all those half-bottle naysayers, after 74 years both showed extremely well, and according to a fellow guest they were as good as a 750ml bottle. They revealed no signs of fatigue, nor did they exhibit any excessive vigor that would have raised suspicions about their authenticity. The domaine bottling came with a neck label stating that the wine was bottled in August 1947 and the quantities produced, although I did not take a note at the time. It demonstrated bricking commensurate with a Burgundy of this age. It is blessed with a heavenly bouquet of astounding precision, extant red fruit laced with camphor, jasmine tea, loam and, with aeration, a splash of balsamic. The bouquet seemed to gently intensify with aeration but always remained somehow languid. The palate comes across as extremely harmonious, exuding that sense of Pinoté. I noticed some distant similarity to a mature Rioja Gran Reserva toward the finish, but if anything, with aeration it reverts back to quintessential mature Musigny, developing a discreet gamy note that I absolutely adore. This is a magnificent wine that lived up to expectations. 98/Drink 2020-2035. The Avery bottling was very similar in appearance to the domaine bottling. Likewise, the aromatic profile bore many similarities, albeit with perhaps even more precision. That sweet core of red fruit is present and correct, laced with similar tertiary and gamy characteristics. The main difference was on the palate, which was texturally slightly more honeyed by comparison and consequently shaved away a little precision on the finish. It is still a gorgeous wine, but in the end I decided that the domaine half-bottle just had the edge. 97/Drink 2020-2030.

2008 Blain-Gagnard Le Montrachet, tasted blind. It needed hours to open up, it started out quite yellow fruity with playful minerality below. After three hours it became far more nuanced, layers of citrus, minerals, apples, floral notes and the balance of this wine was out of this world. Minutes of aftertaste. I thought it was Domaine d’Auvenay Chevalier-Montrachet. 98p

Suzanne Norris, Wine Merchant (United States)  tasted  2 wines  from  Claude Dugat . In a tasting of  10 wines

DRC Richebourg 2012 / There is impressive richness to the attractively textured and lightly mineral-inflected flavors that possess an appealing inner mouth perfume along with fine length on the spicy finish. This should be reasonably approachable in its youth.

John Kapon / CEO / Ackerr Merrall & Condit, Pro (United States)  tasted  1 wines  from  Claude Dugat . In a tasting of  12 wines

We finished with a 1962 Quinto do Noval Nacional. I always find it tough to gather enough energy for tasting notes of dessert wines, and this was no exception. It was smoother than I expected but, of course, great. (96).

Europe, on the other hand, is fucking cold in February. I am now in the middle of six days and five cities in Europe (hello from Oslo), and my first stop was one of my favorite tasting companions in the world, the Keymaster.

It was a quiet night by usual standards, but a welcome one, nonetheless. In fact, the theme would be “one,” which I found quite appropriate, since I like being number one, in case you haven’t heard ; )

Romanée-Conti, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2009 / Just a little less colour than the Tache. Not a lot on the nose at present. You have to go searching for it. What there is is very poised and very harmonious as well as being very complex and classy. The fruit is more red flavoured than the Tache. Marvelously fine and intense. Really quite excellent. 20 points

“Burgundy 2002 Vintage Tasting - part I / Best one today: Dugat-Py Chambertin 97 points: For any Burgundy lover this 2002 vintage ought to be the benchmark wine of modern times together with 1999. Large crop with outstanding quality. Its appearance express the ripe grapes with a very intense, deep ruby colour. Vigor spicy nose with ripe brambles, blueberries and wild strawberries with hints of flower aromas and liquorice. Extremely concentrated medium-bodied mouthfeel. Firm acidic structure with pronounced ripe tannins are wrapped with a good concentration of ripe dark fruits and spicy aromas. Refined wine with a masculine character. Ready to drink today.”

“Claude Dugat Charmes Chambertin 1995 /Fine colour, still very young. Delicious nose. Pure, refined, concentrated and profound. Still with a underlying touch of oak. On the palate full bodied, rich and complex. Lovely long, lingering finish. A very impressive wine which will still keep for ages.”
