History

In the heart of Chablis, in Burgundy, Louis Moreau produces and sells exceptional wines, worldwide recognized. Planted 100% with Chardonnay grape variety, on the unique terroir of Chablis, the vines of Domaines Louis Moreau are spread over the 4 levels of the appellation: Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis 1er Crus and Chablis Grands Crus. Through Domaines Louis Moreau wines, you will discover or re-discover, what makes Chablis wines so unique: finesse, minerality, elegance and purity.

The Moreau family has been settled in Chablis since 1814 and today, Louis represents the 6th generation.

After he graduated in oenology-viticulture at Fresno State University (California) and worked for several wineries in California, Louis came back to Chablis and succeeded his father.

Based on his academic background and keen on passing a vineyard respectful of the environment to the future generations, Louis practices sustainable viticulture in the parcels. He always seeks for the most natural solution to preserve the quality of his vines and his grapes.

Vineyards

Louis Moreau was born from the passion of a family settled in Chablis since 1814. As early as the late 19th century, the love of this family for great wines led to the purchase of plots in Grands Crus and Premiers Crus.

Today, proprietor of parcels in 5 of the Grands Crus, including a monopole, the domaine works many plots within the appellations of Petit Chablis, Chablis and Premiers Crus, in full harmony with the environment.

The most prestigious of its wines is the monopole Chablis Grand Cru Clos des Hospices dans Les Clos, acquired by the Moreau family in 1904. Louis Moreau, who has been heading the domaine since 1994, produces wines with a unique style, combining minerality, fineness, elegance and purity.

Chablis is the “Golden Door of Burgundy”, 180 km away from Paris, going South-Est. Its vineyards cover more than 5400 hectares, over 18 villages representing the following appellations :

  • Petit Chablis (1010 Ha)
  • Chablis (3540 Ha)
  • 1ers Crus (786 Ha / 40 climats)
  • Grands Crus (100 Ha / 7 climats)

producing 40 million of bottles, or 20% of the volume of wines produced in Burgundy (65% of the sales are Export).

Composed 100% of Chardonnay grape variety, Chablis terroir takes its unique typicity from a soil called “Kimmeridgien″, made of layers of limestone and clay 240 million year-old and keeping in its layers ammonites and fossilized oysters (ostrea virgula) that give to it such a unique expression along with minerality and purity to the wines.
