History

Johannes and Sabine Eser have been the 10th generation of the Johannishof winery since 1999. The wide flavor-palette of Riesling wines is facilitated by the variable nature of the ground conditions and development of the wine to full maturity of flavor. Our VDP estate wines serve as an introduction to the quality hierarchy of our winery. The dry VDP “Erste Lage” Rieslings originate from the first class vineyards in Johannisberg and Rüdesheim. The selection is complemented by the semi-dry or “feinherb” Rieslings, wines with a subtle sweetness, and the famous Rheingau Charta wines. The pinnacle of the VDP classification pyramid is represented by the Rieslings from our biggest vineyards. Our VDP “Großen Gewächse”from Rüdesheim Berg Rottland and Johannisberg Hölle are dry, one of a kind wines, reflecting their perfect Riesling character. The classic noble sweet wines which are produced using fully ripe berries, raisins or noble rot grapes also originate from these larger vineyards.

Vineyards

The vineyards of the Johannishof winery comprise of 20 hectares in the districts of Winkel, Johannisberg, Geisenheim and Rüdesheim. Vineyards are planted with 99% Riesling grapes and 1% “white Burgundy” and are cultivated according to modern standards. The wide flavor-palette of Riesling wines is facilitated by the variety of ground conditions available and development of the wines to full maturity of flavor. Value is placed on achieving a distinctive Riesling character. Gentle and individual treatment of the wine allows the aromas and flavors specific for each year to come into their own. The cool, humid hill-side cellar guarantees optimal maturation and storage conditions.

Terroir

The wide spectrum of soil structures featured in the different Johannishof vineyards impart specific features to the respective Rieslings. The Winkel vineyards are composed of deep calciferous loess, yielding elegant wines with subtle fruit-acidity interplay. The Johannisberg vineyards, the source of our Spätlese wines, are characterized by quartzite-weathered soils with deep and partially gravelly loess and loess-loam. The resulting wines present with a distinctive and lightly mineral Riesling character. Somewhat further to the west lie the slate-covered Taunus-quartzite soils of the famous Rüdesheimer hills. Thanks to the favorable, sun-drenched microclimate close to the Rhine, the resulting wines exhibit maturity coupled with a delicate fruity acidity, balance and harmony.

Wine Moments

Here you can see wine moments from tastingbook users.    or    to see wine moments from your world.

Markus Del Monego MW , Wine Writer (Germany)  tasted  2 wines  from  Johannishof . In a tasting of  31 wines

The tasting “VDP Grosses Gewächs” presented the vintage 2018. On this year’s tasting I was mainly concentrating on the northern wine areas for Riesling: Mosel, Saar, Ruwer, the Rheingau, Nahe and Mittelrhein. The vintage is rather successful although water stress and heat have been the main topics and made the live for the vintners not easier. However the results are very convincing.

Künstler Berg Rottland Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2017 / Bright yellow colour with green hue. Excellent nose with multi-layered character, ripe yellow stone fruit, lemon zest, hints of tangerine and mint. On the palate well structured with very juicy character, sweet fruit, fresh citrus fruit, fine acidity and a hint of sweetness in the background, an appetising wine with convincing length. 95 points

Markus Del Monego MW , Wine Writer (Germany)  tasted  1 wines  from  Johannishof . In a tasting of  42 wines

On November 8, 2016 an exiting blind tasting was hold to select some of the finest classified wines produced by vintners of the VDP in Germany. It was a wonderful experience showing a huge number of top rated wines. In the categories of Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder), Pinog Gris (Grauburgunder) and Silvaner, one wine was heading each category. For Riesling, the VDP and myself agreed to decide the best wine of each categaorie of wine areas by drawing lots of all wines with at least 93 points or more. The result of this selection will be available for tasting in the Lufthansa First Class Lounge of Muinch during 2017.

Markus Del Monego MW , Wine Writer (Germany)  tasted  2 wines  from  Johannishof . In a tasting of  135 wines

As every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of August, the VDP showed a huge array of over 500 wines from the german Grand Cru vineyards, designated as Grosses Gewächs, in a preview tasting for professionals and the press. The tasting was hold on August 29 and 30, 2016.

As the sheer quantity of wines available was too much for a short tasting session, I focussed on the grape variety Riesling and on the rather classic areas such as Mosel, Saar, Ruwer, Pfalz, Rheingau, Nahe and Mittelrhein. From these wine regions I have tasted all Rieslings available. In addition I also tasted a small selection of Riesling from Rheinhessen. The tasting showed a very high and rather homogenous quality level due to good conditions in 2015 but also applied experience and knowledge of the vintners. A very successful tasting with highly recommendable wines.
