History

La Follette’s winemaking philosophy embodies both the art and science of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay winemaking with a goalof crafting wines with unique expressions that reflect the winemaking vision of our founder Greg La Follette. A true artistic creation is possible when deep scientific knowledge sets the stage for experimentation and intuition. Employing intelligent risk- taking, La Follette strives to maximize flavor and texture in all of our wines while embracing the French concept of “élevage”, which means to purposefully nurture the wine through its various stages, beginning in the vineyard. Time, attention and precision create individual wines that each offer distinctive flavor and aroma profiles from renowned vineyards.

Vineyards

In producing the most distinctive site-driven Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, La Follette partners with family-owned and farmed vineyards that are committed to maximizing the potential of their unique site, working with them to execute the viticultural directives that La Follette develop with them. These directives are guided by decades of analyzing soil composition, a vine’s biology, and the finished wine’s intended characteristics.

Winemaking

La Follette embraces the old-world concept of terroir: that each individual vineyard site has a unique expression, that can be expressed through the wines made from grapes grown in that place. The winemaker's role is to create a wine that is transparent to the site, pure in its expression and enjoyable to drink. As we work with these sites, vintage after vintage, our understanding deepens and the wines become more reflective of that place, at that time. .

Inside information

As La Follette’s Winemaker, Simone Sequeira has found her purpose, making site-driven, terroir focused wines from singular vineyards. Prior to joining La Follette, Simone ran lab operations at another winery in the Russian River Valley. Simone spent 2002 in Burgundy where she had the privilege of working with Pinot Noir from the Clos de Vougeot, and in 2006 worked harvest in the southern hemisphere, in the Mendoza winegrowing region of Argentina. Simone’s breadth of experiences have forged an appreciation for site and the unique interplay that art and science contribute to revealing the purest expression of terroir. Simone has been with La Follette since its inception, and continues to create wines that give voice to singular terroirs.
