Christie’s auctions Luce for the Baryshnikov Arts Center

It was a 57,100-dollar triumph, the amount that Christie’s gavelled down to close the bidding of prestigious Italian wines organised by the London-based auction house. That made it possible for Luce to donate that same amount to the Baryshnikov Arts Center, the foundation created by Russian ballet genius Mikhail Baryshnikov to encourage young talent across the entire spectrum of the arts.

The auction was followed with intense interest by attending wine connoisseurs, who put bids on twenty separate lots, the same number of vintages that Luce is celebrating this year, a collection of twenty utterly unique and priceless vintages and bottle sizes, as distinctive and invaluable as the assistance that Luce has proudly given to the arts.

History

Luce is the result of a project launched in the early 1990s, the fruit of a dream of two leaders in the history of wine, Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi.

Their common goal was to unite together their individual passionate commitments and their own personal traditions, in order to offer the world a truly exceptional, utterly different wine, grown in the heart of Montalcino. Their sons, Lamberto and Tim, at that time both young winemakers, were the ones who brought into reality their fathers’ vision, uniting together in a magisterial blend, Sangiovese and Merlot, a wine that was given the name Luce, as tribute to an element essential for the flourishing of every new being.

The first two vintages, 1993 and 1994, were released together, in 1997, and aroused enormous interest, fascinated by the innovative character that was the hallmark of this project. But that was just the beginning, and any uncertainty engendered by the arrival on stage of an unexpected new actor quickly gave way to appreciation for the new wine’s indubitable quality.

Year after year, Luce succeeded in crafting an expression that was uniquely individual to each growing season. Beginning with the 2004 vintage, the direction of Luce was entrusted solely to Lamberto Frescobaldi.

Vineyards

Located southwest of Montalcino, Tenuta Luce della Vite comprises 192 hectares, with 77 dedicated to vines. Some of the vineyards date back to 1977, but the majority were planted at the beginning of 1997, at an average density of 6,100 vines per hectare.

Lying at elevations ranging from 350 to 420 metres, the Luce della Vita estate is one of the highest in Montalcino. The higher sections of the estate display galestro-rich, well-drained soils with little organic matter, ideal conditions for growing Sangiovese, while in the lower areas the soil exhibits more clay and sand, in which Merlot flourishes. The long, dry, sun-filled summers characteristic of this area, plus the vineyards’ south-facing exposure, guarantee the grapes a gradual and consistent ripening, which in turn yields wines of superb concentration and vigour.

Vineyard management practices follow the canons of sustainable agriculture, which favours organic practices that ensure the vine’s health and balance.

Winemaking

Vine yield, averaging 30 hectolitres of wine per hectare, is deliberately kept very low in order to produce a wine that will express all the qualities of its grape variety and its terroir. Cluster and leaf-thinning are normal practices. Merlot and Sangiovese come to complete ripeness three or four weeks apart, between mid-September and early October, so they are harvested separately, parcel by parcel, then manually inspected as they arrive at the cellar and are vinified individually. Only after the fermentations conclude, towards the end of November, are the lots blended together.

Wine Moments

Here you can see wine moments from tastingbook users.    or    to see wine moments from your world.

Markus Del Monego MW , Wine Writer (Germany)  tasted  1 wines  from  Luce della Vite . In a tasting of  1 wines

In 1993 was the first vintage of a new wine: Luce della Vite. The project of two famous wine families, Marchesi de Frescobaldi from Tuscany and Robert Mondavi from California, brought two grape varieties and a special terroir together. The grape varieties are Sangiovese and Merlot, the terroir is the one from Montalcino. Now, the new vintage is close to be released. On May 1, 2021 the wine lovers can appreciate the new born blend, Luce 2018. The vintage 2018 proves to be excellent with a damp spring with medium to high temperatures. Thus the vegetative development of the Sangiovese and Merlot grapes was very homogenous. The additional rains during the flowering phase slowed-down the fruit set, naturally lowering the production load of the plants. Summer time brought a regular climatic situation with little rainfalls and no excessive temperatures. I addition, the temperature differences between day and night in September, coupled with the northern winds, promoted a magnificent aromatic evolution in the ripening of the grapes.

Lucente is the second label of the famous Luce della Vite blended with Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. Vinified in stainless steel, where the malolactic fermentation took place too, the wine was matured for 12 months in partially new barriques inside Tenuta Luce’s cellar before bottling, The wine is mirroring perfectly well its terroir.  Ian D' Agata, Wine Writer (Italy)  tasted  1 wines  from  Luce della Vite . In a tasting of  26 wines

Ceretto Barbaresco Bricco Asili 1978 / Dark red with an amber edge. Deep, concentrated aromas and flavors of red cherry, minerals, marzipan, mushroom and spices. Complex and tactile on the palate; in fact, this wine is still marvelously rich and dense—thicker and more concentrated than the 1982 but also less piercingly fresh. Smooth tannins caress the palate on the rising finish. A great wine and an example of how great traditionally made Barbarescos can be.

Mélanie Laurent / Sommelier, Pro (France)  tasted  3 wines  from  Luce della Vite . In a tasting of  10 wines

The Sandrone Barolo Le Vigne 2014 surprises with its intense garnet color, alive and beautiful. As it ages, it will slowly fade in intensity and gain subtle orange-brick hues. The scent, broad and persistent, first shows fruit notes of wild strawberry and raspberry, then floral notes including wild flowers and dried roses. The spice aromas of cinnamon and star anise emerge at the finish. With time we expect secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors to evolve, such as elegant vanilla notes and then dried mushrooms, leather, tar and, perhaps, truffles. The flavor is rich and intense, with youthful expressiveness in the tannin and acidity. Time will bring greater harmony, resulting in a more complex and balanced wine. It is a young, solid and promising Barolo, borne of an ancient process which combines knowledge of the territory with the ability of the various characters of each vineyard site to meld into a harmonious whole.

Hiroshi Ishida, Sommelier (Japan)  tasted  1 wines  from  Luce della Vite . In a tasting of  14 wines

This is one of Barone Ricasoli's two Grand Selezione wines. The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colledilà is a delicious wine that excels in terms of its generosity and pureness. The 2013 is an excellent one for the 7.5 hectare Colledilà vineyard that dates all the way back to 1832 (it is older than Italy). The 2012 vintage was not produced. Poor soils consist of marl limestone and alberese stones, and the wine does indeed present evident mineral tones that add balance and elegance. It feels etched and shapely in the mouth. I loved the muscle and sheer power of this beautiful wine. It requires ample decanting time, but it should age gracefully. This wine will be released in 2016.
