History

Alongside its own premier cru vineyards in Beaune, La Maison Camille Giroud also purchases grapes from all over the Côte d’Or to curate a solid roster of fine Burgundies. With its compact size and minutious approach, this negociant produces “haute couture” wines.

When the domain was purchased in 2001 by Americans Ann Colgin, Joe Wender and their partners, they hired the talented David Croix straight out of school. He has managed the property up until 2016, with Carel Voorhuis now in charge. They vinified together the 2016 vintage to ensure a fine continuity in the syle of the wines. The reds are what we love about Burgundy with their bright bouquets, sensual mouthfeels, and fine, silky tannins. A tasting here is always highly educational for wine-lovers. Not only are their wines impressive, but it’s one of the few places in the Côte d’Or where one can enjoy everything from Maranges to Marsannay, passing through all the grand crus in between. It is not uncommon for Camille Giroud to make wines from over 30 different appellations in any given vintage.

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair La Romanée 2017 / This Intense almost opaque dark ruby coloured wine offers a beautiful range of aromas – ripe dark berries, wild strawberries, blueberries, brambles, violets and spices such as anise.
Mouth-filling, rich elegant texture formed by ripe tannins and intense fruit. Fruit intensity is generous but not over-extracted. Oak adds extra complexity to the wine’s flavour profile in a very elegant way. Long finish with concentration. 97p

Nothing beasts a great Alsace riesling especially from Roscaker grand cru plot...... but a great erstes gewächs riesling from Germany like Wittmann's Westhofener Riesling Trocken can certainly challenge it!

Romanée-Conti 2013 /Bright, dark red. Very reticent nose hints at plum, noble herbs and musky mulch. Plush and utterly spherical in the mouth, delivering a rare combination of richness and weightlessness. Began with primary fruit taking a back seat to lower-toned, soil-driven smoke, minerals and underbrush, but lively raspberry and spice elements emerged with aeration. Great depth and sweetness here owing to the tiny yield of less than 18 hectoliters per hectare, but less sexy in the early going than La Tâche. A wine of great class and length, this firmly tannic Romanée-Conti will evolve positively for decades.

Whenever there are Montrachet and Chambertin from great vintages on the table, there seems not much room for talk of the other wines. However, this time the underdogs – Giaconda Pinot Noir 1999 and Salwey Henkenberg GG Grauerburgunder 2016 – managed to draw the attention....though only for moment:) It was once again proven that Chambertin and Montrachet from top vintages like 2005 and 2010 need to be decanted well in advance (4-5 hours) to deliver their true colours.

Gerald Lu, Sommelier (Singapore)  tasted  1 wines  from  Maison Camille Giroud . In a tasting of  13 wines

Coche Dury Corton-Charlemagne 2012 / The nose gives off a fine bouquet - typical of the appellation - of brioche, spices and white fruit fragrances on a slightly vanilla-flavoured base. On the palate, it offers intense freshness and richness that underline the perfect balance of this strong wine.

Clive Coates / MW, Wine Writer (France)  tasted  1 wines  from  Maison Camille Giroud . In a tasting of  77 wines

Le Montrachet, Domaine des Comtes Lafon 2009 / Quite a lot of new wood masks the flavour and character of the wine on the nose. Plus there is a bit of reduction. I don't find the grip, depth and class I am expecting in Le Montrachet. The follow through is a bit weak. No better than very good today.

The 2009 white wines in the Côte d'Or are attractive but not as successful. Yes: there is no lack of ripe, succulent fruit, but here I do have to search more extensively for the sort of reserve I seek; the austerity at this stage that indicates the wine will be better at eight years old than at four. The quality in the Mâconnais as well as Chablis has been to some extent compromised by their local weather conditions. In general I prefer the 2008s and 2010s in both cases, but there are no long faces. It may be the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise have got the best of it this year, as far as white wines are concerned; but elsewhere growers are nevertheless more than happy. The Beaujolais crus, on the other hand, are terrific. These are the best Beaujolais I have enjoyed for many a year.

Romanée-Conti, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti 2009 / Just a little less colour than the Tache. Not a lot on the nose at present. You have to go searching for it. What there is is very poised and very harmonious as well as being very complex and classy. The fruit is more red flavoured than the Tache. Marvelously fine and intense. Really quite excellent. 20 points

Clive Coates / MW, Wine Writer (France)  tasted  1 wines  from  Maison Camille Giroud . In a tasting of  46 wines

2005 - A magnificent red wine vintage in Burgundy. This was a dry year, though never particularly hot, save for a heat-wave in May. A hail-storm on 17 July devastated the vines between the villages of Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet. After a mixed August, and much-needed rain on 6 September, the skies cleared and it became increasingly sunny and warm. The Côte d'Or harvest began in the middle of the month and was all but complete by the week-end of 1st. October.

Now ten years old, the red wines, though many are still rather closed, are well deserving of all the bally-hoo they engendered at the outset. The vintage is consistently good (except naturally in Santenay and Chassagne-Montrachet) from Marsannay to Maranges, as well as proportionately so from grand cru to the humblest generic. Few past vintages come close. Perhaps the nearest is 1999, but that was a very much more generous harvest. The relative shortness of the 2005 crop can be seen in the concentration of the wines. They also have depth, finesse, harmony and the potential to last. But they are not monolithic. What more do you want? Don't start opening the best until 2020 or so.

Clive Coates / MW, Wine Writer (France)  tasted  1 wines  from  Maison Camille Giroud . In a tasting of  13 wines

Burgundy was beset by two problems in 2004: an unprecedented outbreak of oidium (which attacks the fruit, rather than the leaves) and several attacks of hail. Moreover, the crop was more than plentiful, and the season was wetter than usual, greyer than normal and colder than the average. There was an attack of ladybirds, say some, though what effect this would have on the potential crop was not made clear. Ladybirds, after all, are major predators against aphids. September, however, was kind, and what looked like being a disaster at the beginning of the month did in fact turn out at least OK - in those vineyards correctly maintained - for reds, and better still for whites.

“DRC Burgundy 2006 Tasting

Regarding the 2006 vintage it stands out in the whole DRC range as a delicate and feminine vintage with vibrancy and warm spicy character dominated by clove and Asian spices.

DRC CONTI 2006 - 95 points. Moderately intense, ruby red colour. Although the complex nose shows rich Christmas spicy aromas of cloves, cinnamon and hints of licorice, it is still closed. On palate the wine shows greatness in its density, concentration and vibrancy with immense balance and elegant structure. Vivid acidity is shining through the long lingering finish with tobacco, cappuccino and floral tones. Aristocratic wine, pars above all the rest. ”
