History

1880 NASCITA VINO BARBARESCO - The first year of wine made with the Barbaresco classification as we know it today was in 1890. In the historic center of the village Vincenzo and Rosa producd the first bottle of Barbaresco wine. Our family produced wine before this year and it was always considered to be a unique wine with a long history about an important wine and period in time.

1989 PIRA - Alfredo and Luigina purchased the historic Cascina Pira near the fortress of Castiglione Falletto and began vinifying Barolo wine with the label La Rocca e La Pira. We gradually introduced the name Pira that represents this beautiful terroir.

2014 ALBESANI e GALLINA - Thanks to our friendship with the owner of the historic Albesiani and Gallina vineyard in Neive, we have rented portion of the vineyard in order to produce a new Barbaresco wine for Roagna. 2014 was our first year of production.

Vineyards

Our family has lived in the village of Barbaresco for centuries and long before the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco became known around the world. We own 20 hectares, 50 acres, of which 12 hectares, 30 acres, are planted to vines while the rest remain wild forest. Our historic vineyards are located within the Barbaresco and Barolo designated areas. There are five specific vineyards that are found on our property.

Barbaresco Asili - The name Asili (Asei) is derived from the Piemontese dialect and it is one of the historic vineyards located within the village of Barbaresco. Asili is located in the Southern of the area of the village. Our parcel in Asili was purchased by Giovanni Roagna in 1961.

The total surface planted for our portion of the vineyard is 0.22 Hectare (0.54 acre) and it has a Southwestern exposure with an altitude of 250 Meters above sea level. There are two roads that divide the hill into the three sections. Our section of the vineyard is located exactly in the middle of the historic part of the hill of Asili.

The soil was formed during the Tertiary (Cenozoic) period approximately seventy-million years ago as a result of marine sedimentation founder under the ocean which covered all of our land. The vineyard is next to the area of fortresses and follows the hill of Pajé. The chalky clay soil, typical of this part of the village, has thick veins of sand. Here we have old vine Nebbiolo.

Juha Lihtonen / The Best Scandinavian Sommelier 2003, Pro (Finland)  tasted  2 wines  from  Roagna . In a tasting of  35 wines

If I should name the underdog wine region of the world, Loire it is! And more precisely Anjou and Saumur! Lovely range of Moulin Touchais wines from 1971-2006 are so expressive and Guiberteau's red and white wines from the Brézé hill astonishing. Along with these gems, Dean Hewitson's range charmed me with Cote-Rotie-like Ned&Henry's and Hermitage-like Truffle Row. 2018 Lulu Sauvignon Blanc refreshed the palate lovely - the best Sav from Hewitson so far!

2011 Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva – 94 points / Concentrated and deep aromas with intense and tight fruit with cherries, plums, wet leather, dark chocolate and tobacco smoke. Medium + bodied and rich wine with juicy and appealing red berry feeling, leather, dark chocolate and nuts. Good structure. The wine is still lacking in start and finish. However, the tannins are nice and help balance the wine in a good way. 94 points. For now. (96P)

2008 Blain-Gagnard Le Montrachet, tasted blind. It needed hours to open up, it started out quite yellow fruity with playful minerality below. After three hours it became far more nuanced, layers of citrus, minerals, apples, floral notes and the balance of this wine was out of this world. Minutes of aftertaste. I thought it was Domaine d’Auvenay Chevalier-Montrachet. 98p
