History

Situated in the Assmannshausen in the Rheingau region, the wine estate of August Kesseler consists of vineyard sites in Lorch (for Riesling and Silvaner wines), on the slopes of the hills around Rüdesheim and in the area called “Assmanshäuser Höllenberg”.  August Kesseler took over the estate from his parents in 1977 as a young man, and has qualitatively expanded the best area under vines to 18 hectares (44.48 acres).

Experience gained in winegrowing regions in the USA and France has taught August Kesseler the value in placing great importance on quality–improving measures in the vineyard and in the cellar, which restore the characteristic flavor to the Assmanshäuser Spätburgunder – a flavor which once made it world-famous – and which give the Riesling from the Rüdesheimer Berg a good balance between the typical acidity and the natural residual sugar.

Vineyards

The small commune of Assmannshausen in the lower Rheingau has deep roots with wine-growing – just as our family. Our estate with 33 ha of wine-growing space is today cultivated by me, August Kesseler, and my team. The majority of our vines grow on the Rheingau’s steepest slopes. Our refined, cool Pinot noirs are grown here in Assmannshausen. They love the meagre slaty soil.

The very specific ‘terroirs’ in Rüdesheim and Lorsch endow our Rieslings with the unmistakable character of their origin, just as those in Hattenheim, Erbach and Kiedrich. To own such extraordinary treasures of the soil obliges us to meet but the highest of quality standards. Our vines are vinified in a cellar that was dug into the slate of the Höllenberg in 1792 – and there, craftsmanship rules today as it did back then.
