Written Notes

Perfect level, perfect cork. Bought soon after release.

2001 is a great vintage for most regions in Germany. There is no risk in buying the sweet wines from this year but even the best dry wines are still a delicious treat.

The 2001 Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck Riesling ERSTES GEWÄCHS from August Kesseler is still very much alive after nearly 17 years. The refreshing acidity and the high level of ripeness of the grapes have conserved this thoroughly crafted dry wine. The colour has all signs of a much younger Riesling, pretty light with even green edges. At 13% Vol. it has a medium body and tastes as if it was a decade younger, nice minerality, finest fruit. I was curious of how long you can keep this wine open and fact it, that after three days it was not oxidized and the fruit flavours of apple, pear, abricot were still very attractive. An excellent wine, if you can find it anywhere do not hesitate to buy it.

In my opinion most of the now labelled as GROSSES GEWÄCHS wines of Germany are seriously undervalued and have a bright future. Unlike with white Burgundy you will rarely have annoying experiences with premox. Just stick to Riesling from the well-known producers and enjoy.
