History

The course was set by ancestor Heinrich Gross: With the purchase of the vineyard on the Witscheiner Herrenberg in 1907, the foundation stone was laid for the later family of winegrowers. In the course of five generations and more than a hundred years, there has been a change to exclusive viticulture. Alois Gross, who in the early eighties together with Ulrike fully committed himself to quality winegrowing, made big strides. The Gross family soon reaped the fruits of this work: Gross-Weine in many highly decorated restaurants, followed in 1991 by the "Falstaff" magazine, as a founding member of the "Styrian Classic" (today: STK -Wi-goods) Alois Gross, together with his colleagues for great recognition of Styrian wine at home and abroad. The winery conquered a fixed place among the top wine estates in Austria.

In 2006, Alois Gross transferred the responsibility in the cellar to Johannes, while Michael still gained experience in the international wine world. A short time later, the brothers took over at the age of only 21 and 19 years of their parents' business and followed in the footsteps of their ancestors - Alois knew from personal experience, how important it is to make the groundbreaking decisions at an early age. Carefully and step by step, the brothers successfully developed the traditional winery and gave it a new direction, which today leads them together with their families into the future. Thus, the winery Gross also opened the wine-growing region "Štajerska Slovenija", which differs in soil and climate hardly from the southern Styria. There the family shows a pioneering spirit and the result confirms their determination.

In order to give the peculiarities room to unfold, we also vinify very small vineyard plots in separate barrels. The winery Gross is known for giving the wines time for their development. Even bottled wines often stay for years at the winery before leaving the cellar. In the heart of the wine cellar, clearly visible to the visitor, rarities come to maturity that we, the taste buds, do not want to deprive the wine lover.

At the winery guests meet four generations. In the cellar or on the viewing terrace, the family members talk about the wines of the house and walk through the vineyard and vineyard. In spring and autumn, visitors are spoiled with home-made delicacies.

Vineyards

Today it is Johannes and Michael Gross who pursue their craft in the attractive hilly landscape of southern Styria and the neighboring Štajerska Slovenija. Their well-known vineyards such as Nussberg, Perz or Sulz are characterized by extreme slopes. The vineyards are sustainable and quality-preserving maintained by hand, the use of machinery is hardly possible. Cool alpine winds meet in the region on the warm air of the Adriatic. The grapes can mature wonderfully in the alpine-Mediterranean climate and get by the day-night temperature fluctuations up to 20 degrees of freshness and aroma. The floors are varied. Depending on the location, sand and gravel, shell limestone, marl or volcanic soils leave an unmistakable characteristic in the wine.

The typical regional assortment consists of white wine varieties such as Pinot Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, Sauvignon blanc or the Slovenian Furmint. The origin of each wine, characterized by soil and climate, is in the foreground during the pressing.
