Written Notes

A very special commemorative 20th-anniversary bottling, in an unnecessarily heavy bottle, of a blend of 2016, 2017 and 2018 vintages. Just six barriques made, with ageing between 20 and 40 months, blended in October 2020 and bottled in just 450 specially designed bottles with design input from Aalto University in Finland. 2016 was warmer than usual, 2017 shrunk by frost and 2018 reckoned pretty perfect. Good background to the bodega on European Cellars website.
Deep, vibrant, purplish colour and great fragrance and the lightest possible hint of oak at the moment but great suavity of texture and rich fruit but real freshness too. Not a hint of the drying quality nor overoaking that characterises some Ribera del Dueros. The finish is tangy and energetic, suggesting quite a long life. Congratulations to Mariano Garcia and team for this project. I was sent a sample without the final label so don't know what the finished alcohol was; I suspect 14.5% will be on the label. I have a suspicion this wine will not be cheap …
