Barbera Fossil Hill 2023 ($30) – Barbera is a grape which is still fighting for its due recognition – it deserves at least that. From the cooler and higher altitude vineyards in the Orange region in New South Wales, the colour is a vibrant red. The aromas swirl around red fruits, dried herbs, cloves, a touch of milk chocolate, cherries and warm earth. This is quite a ripe, flavoursome style – red fruits to the fore – with juicy acidity and fine balance. There are sleek tannins and a lingering finish in this wine of medium length. Enjoy it over the next five to six years. Another fine Barbera which does not deserve to slip through the cracks. Get on board. 91.
