The Story

Brilliant purple in colour, this wine displays sweet, ripe strawberry aromas, coupled with complex Chinese five spice and cinnamon nuances. The palate is elegant and supple, with remarkable power, intensity and length. Framed by ripe, moderate tannin the graceful, sweet strawberry fruit is complemented, yet not dominated, by spice. Overall, the wine has wonderful poise and balance.

Written Notes

5th wine in the first bracket of Sipnot 2011 and the one that provoked the most debate in this set. It is a seriously big, some said massive, pinot. No doubt about it, but was it too much? Yes, for some. No, for others. No doubt that there is endless flavour, and plenty to like, but it certainly lacks finesse and there was much debate about ageing. Whether it will age might be moot as it is definitely a wine for enjoying now, or perhaps one should say, that one can enjoy now. Rich and plush. Notes of blueberries were immediately evident. Spice, black fruits, some oak, plum pudding, some vanillin notes. A creamy texture – I think someone described it as a pinot made by or for lovers of Barossa. Whatever one thinks, this is a full flavoured wine that is quite lovely to drink now.
